Pink Moon is the third and final album by Nick Drake, the British folk singer who died of an overdose of antidepressants in 1974 at age 26. It used to be hard to find. For years, he was known only to singers, songwriters and musicheads. But now Pink Moon ranks sixth on Amazon.com’s music sales charts. Sales of the record are up 400 percent in the last year.
A look on the packaging of Pink Moon’s cover tells you why. Above a small blue circular sticker with a VW symbol and the tag line, "Drivers Wanted," is the line, "As heard in the new Volkswagen Cabrio commercial."
You probably already know the one.
The ad shows a group of friends out for a moonlit drive in a Cabrio convertible. They are listening to Drake’s moody, impressionistic "Pink Moon," the title song. They reach their destination, a party, but so transported are they by their convertible and by Drake’s firm, wispy voice and virtuosic guitar playing that the group decides to turn back.
In 30 seconds, you’re hooked.

| In my opinion, he was probably one of the greatest singer/songwriters from these shores. Also a highly talented guitarist, but unfortunately was very shy and didn't like performing or fame, depressed he tragically died(suicide-arguably) very young, but left behind three superbly crafted albums which any music fan should not be without..Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. |

Thnx guys .
Nice one, Duphrates. At first, I was looking for someone who was born earlier on. It's quite difficult to find someone who died at the age of 26 when looking between 1850 and 1983.

Okay, with 4 generals left, I think we can take a risk. I'm not asking wether you played the guitar though, since that still won't tell us for sure that I'm thinking of the right person (and if you did, we still don't know that much). I'll just give it a shot, it's the only person I could find matching the description:
General: Did you have a chart hit in '72 with the song "Pink Moon"?

I found an English singer who played guitar (amongst other instruments) and had a chart hit in the '70. He died not long after that.

Pi, Cadmium , DP, et al.: Perhaps we've narrowed the instrument??
BTW, he's not a google question. I saw him in concert several years ago.

Just thinking, we could also be looking for a person playing in a band. Should we make sure this is the case?
[edit] I did find one person that could fit the description. Shall I take a try? [/edit]

It was Gigi D'agostino who made a dance version of "The Riddle". I'll hold my general too.
So now we have 5 generals left, right? [edit]make that 4 [/edit]
We're looking for an English male, who lived somewhere between 1850 and 1983, is known for Pop music and played an instrument.
::wanders off to google to do some searching::

DP: He played an instrument, but might have also sung. I just asked about the only D jazz musician I could think of, and he's not from England and he has not been dead that long. I googled and found the founder of British Pop music, a D name, who just passed away last November.
Miles Davis was correct.

Group thinking ahead, no questions
'Pop' music is still a rather wide field, as it can conceivably include jazz, big band, ballroom, musical and what have you. The guy was an instrumentalist, which could hint at jazz (not necessarily). ANybody know famous jazz musicians that fit the answers so far? |
