Minotaur was suggesting a "Read First" post in all forums. The post would get it's post date modified, and stay at the top of the forum at all times.
I'll do one for this forum explaining the faq and stuff. If the other mods want to do one, then they can too--although we've already been talking about this in the mod forum for a while. |

Agreed. I had to post for the rules on the 3x3, although I then salvaged the thread by turning it into a real 3x3 itself.

I think that Icarian is a father and Daedalian is his son, or vice versa, but i'm not sure
When i posted this i was an Icarian.

Raye: I think the magic number is 30 for becoming a dead alien, but for more info, check the FAQ:http://www.greylabyrinth.com/Forums/faq.html#Daedalian

Sounds good. I'm not quite sure I see the difference between Icarian and Daedalian members myself... I think the more posts you make the closer you are to being a Daedalian, right? Where did the names come from anyway? Icarian is from ancient Greek mythology I think... |

| How about a friendly invitation to read the GL archives. Most of the reoccuring ones are in the archives. Besides the archives are great fun. |

That would be a pretty daunting task. I think we should be somewhat safe by just noting a few puzzles that keep coming up:
-Monty Hall and the Three Doors
-The "What is Greater than God?" Riddle
-The Liar and/or the Truthteller
What am I missing? I mean big ones that just keep showing up over and over. I don't think that there are too many, but I'm sure that's not all of them. |

| A nice alphebetical listing of all covered puzzels will be nice (I know Amy already said it, but I'm Really tired of seeing the same puzzles over and over again) |

How about the ever-popular :"What is the difference between Icarian and Daedalian members?"
And let's not forget the all-important:"How can I puncuate my posts with neat little smiley faces and such?"

1) What are all these different Forums for? (You could break this up into several questions and answers, one for each Forum, but somewhere it should be noted that postings in one Forum that really belong in another will not be welcomed.) 2) How can I respond to someone else's post? (This may seem self-explanatory, but people do have a tendency to start new threads when what they want to do is add to an existing thread.) 3) How can I start a new thread? 4) I made a mistake in my post. Can I fix it? 5) I realized my post was completely wrong. Can I delete it? 6) How can I put hyperlinks in my posts? 7) I clicked on a link in a post and it didn't work. What's wrong? 8) Is there anything it's not appropriate to post in the Discussion Forums? (In this section you could reiterate all the stuff in the other FAQ about what's not acceptable in the Forums--harassment, obscenity, etc.--and also guide visitors to the puzzles we've all seen *many* times before and don't want to rehash. "Gee, why did everyone get all mad at me when I posted a comment on the Monty Haul puzzle?" )

There are a lot of questions that keep popping up whenever new visitors arrive. And there seems to be a lot of confusion on the part of new visitors as to where to post certain kinds of messages (e.g. puzzles keep popping up in the "Ask the Minotaur" forum). We need a FAQ for new visitors that covers concepts specific to the GL Discussion Forum. Some of those garbage messages from random users are inevitable, but it would be nice to have something to guide those who would like to become intelligent users.
So, what do new users need to know? I don't think this will need to be the longest FAQ in the world. What information is crucial? |
