That being said, the spam bots are back. I actually suspect they're spam humans, since I didn't hear about any huge advances in the field of CAPTCHA-solving.
Does anyone have a good suggestion of how to deal with this? We don't want to remove ourselves from search engines (see the "new blood" thread), but an original solution like the asterix (that still works wonders) would be welcome.
The problem statement is users sign up, choose a bunch of random threads and post in them, usually something that somewhat relevant. However, they embed a link either in their signature or their post. |
The last several spam posts I've cleaned up have been verbatim reposts with spam sigs. So why not prevent Icarian members from having Sigs? I can't see a human spammer making 30 posts just to post one spam link on 31. |

Possibilities:
1) New members must wait 24 hours before being allowed to post. They can always post as a guest if they're desperate. This will probably upset mafia games though where new usernames are created.
2) First 24 hours. Posts must begin with an asterisk.
3) Any attempt to post a link within the first 20 posts will result in the post being rejected. New users can always just paste the URL into the post and invite users to copy it into their browser.
I quite like option 3. Not sure how easy it would be to implement though. |

| All I did was read a lot about the problem and potential solutions, then chose one of many pre-made solutions. If I'd written it myself (as originally intended) it would have taken much longer and the end result wouldn't be as sophisticated. I mean, generating random math questions in image form, wow. |

Oh, hell yes. As expected, the prior modification didn't really stop the bots. However, this new mod I've installed is so jam-packed with random options and annoying anti-bot measures, I am actually optimistic about it stopping spam. Samadhi, Hy, etc: please don't change the settings without telling me, but feel free to add more questions. Just avoid ones whose answers are "yes" or "no" ("yeah" and "no way" are fine).
Let's see if this works. |

Good news, everyone! I failed my mandatory "basic electricity and magnetism" exam, and as a result was deleted from Physics 2 for not having the necessary prerequisites. This means I have an extra 10 free hours or so every week, and that I don't have to take that cursed course for another semester.
More to the point, it means I FINALLY found the time to install some new anti-spam measures. Currently it's yet, another subtle change to our registration forms that should confuse most bots. If (when) this proves not to be enough, I'll install the "question" mod, as people reported dropping from multiple postings a day to completely nothing after installing it with some personalised questions. Here's to hoping. |

| So far I've noticed one post that looked like spam but didn't have any links, hidden links, profile links or anything at all to really make it spam. I left it alone just in case. |

Just a quick question. I field a fair few spam posts simply due to my time zone, and I've meant to ask this for a while. Should we only move topics which contain links, or do we include the ones which aren't advertising/linking anything, but are obviously spam posters?
I've been leaving the link-free ones just to be on the safe side (besides, the spam button is pretty fun, I might as well let others share the joy), but should I just ban them? What benefit is it to them to start a thread which does not link to anything? |

We really need a spam button over on mafiascum. The one here has spoiled me. |

Updating on bans:
I haven't banned for the last couple of weeks, mainly to see what happened but also because banning is a pain and I'm just tired when I get home from work or school. And I'm usually more interested in figuring out my homework or relaxing than banning spammers. *queue violins*
I just checked the spammers over that period and it was pretty much what I expected. Most of the IPs spammed about 5 times over a period of a day or two. Naturally, I banned them and I believe it supports my earlier argument regarding spammer behaviour regarding IPs. However, going forward I figure I'll do a check about only once a week. Why?
Because I don’t think this is really a problem. I haven’t heard any complaints about spam in some time. That’s probably because spam lasts at most minutes and sometimes is cleared in under 1 minute. This virtually erases the spam footprint on the GL, even if the IPs aren't banned. This is why I’m comfortable with once a week. (until I learn/teach myself enough code to make it one touch*)
Naturally, the coders (Hy, Antrax, and Jeep) deserve a round of applause. But I’d also like to thank all the people that move the spam. Without you volunteers, the GL would be overloaded. It’s one of the things I love about the GL. Everyone who can, is doing what they can to keep the GL a forum worth visiting, not for accolades or gratitude but just because they love the GL.
*Not that anyone would worry about an aspect that is such a low priority, but it's my pet peeve so if everyone else would leave it be thanks |

I don't know what the hell the "ignore this field" is supposed to do, but it didn't stop me from registering this name and posting with it. I entered "jfdsafa" in both the "Desired Alias" and "ignore this field" fields, and it went through just fine.

Bah! Drama.
I thought things went down like this:
Antrax had given you the password and sent me a copy out of courtesy. He also told me it was ok for me to give Hy the password, assuming I didn't just pass it out indiscriminately to someone who claimed to be Hy. Which is a good thing, since how else would I know for sure that it's ok for him to have the password?
I had no idea this was part of any drama...
Oh, and Antrax gave me the password so I could help out with some of the coding. Hence the new game tags, etc.
