I had some links to images for old puzzles etc. that were hosted on GLPics. I most likely still have the originals and could host them on PhotoBucket and edit the original posts, rather than leave a broken link. |
If the file name is still the same, re-upload them. The url for the new files follow the same structure as the old. As long as your username is the same, the broken links will heal themselves. |

I see.
I was thinking that you might have access to more sophisticated queries or that your could query the database directly via SQL to get a list of every post that contains a link to glpics.
If it's a manual task then I'll wait until somebody complains about a broken link and I'll fix it them.
Thanks for all you work on this btw. |

We are officially back online at www.GLPics.com!
If you had an account originally, I once again will say you CAN NOT use your old credentials to get into the new site, you MUST PM me so I can setup a new account for you. PM me with your email address, and I will get back to you with your new username and password.
Also, If there is anything that was salvaged form the crash, it will be in your new account. Like I had said before, about 95% of the files were lost, so don't expect anything to be there.
Lastly, I will be Giving out temp passwords for all new user accounts. It is important that you change your password the first time you log in to the site. Check out the Powerpoint downloadthat I have done to show you how to do that and give you other basic uses on how to use the new GLPics.
Don't have Powerpoint? Here is the PDF file instead to download.
Thanks everyone for your patience while I have been working on this. |

i would have to go through every post on the GL with a GLPics link in it. I can do it from the "other side" so to speak.

New Update
We are very close to the full on new launch. The new GLPics will look quite a bit different than the old one.
Your old username and password WILL NOT WORK on the new site, everyone who wants a GLPics account will have to PM me with an email address to get an account created for them.
Additionally 95% of GLPics files from the server are gone. IF you have any files left, they will be in your new GLPics account when your account is set up. If you do not have any files in your account, your files have been lost. Old links will not work, you will have to update any links that you want to share.
I will be making a powerpoint tutorial which should be ready within 6 hours, as well as instructions.
Also, I will be overseeing a monthly backup of GLPics while I am taking care of this. This is so we have something to fall back on in case this ever happens again. |
Thanks for your hard work on this, MNO. I really appreciate it, as I'm sure we all do.
I've sent a PM with my email. |

UPDATE
I'm currently in the process of alpha testing a new File manager for GLpics. It will look quite a bit different that it used to, but it looks more like a GUI style, where the old was more list based. If these tests work, I'll be writing a tutorial for new users. |

MNO, one other thing. I'll need a few of the META threads in the TopGLer forum unlocked, so that I can edit the links to the pics involved in those puzzles.
Off the top of my head, that means my puzzle and Zag's will need to be unlocked for an update. |

it will be a week or two at the minimum to put everything back together. I'd recommend for the time being use something else, and when I'm finished I'll let you all know.
I'm currently looking for a file manager that was similar to how GLPics was originally hosted. Once I do get that system going, I'm going to start the process of putting the files of what we do have back in its place and do the process of getting accounts set up. |

| Any updates? For the purposes of the GL meta, I'd like to pic an image hosting solution and stick with it. I'd love to use GLpics if we think I will have access again in the next few weeks. If it's longer than that, I'll choose another option. |

Well...Some News:
I'm going to be the one overseeing the rebuilding of GLPics. Since it is going to be a rebuild, everyone will need new accounts set up. IF I can retrieve any data off the servers I will PM you directly. From what I see however, it seems like a good chunk of data is gone and not retreivable. Hy will be calling them to see if they have any backups at all. |

I got Dropbox, and it seems pretty effective for its purposes. However, I have the need to write php forms for generating email from html forms. As far as I can tell, I can't do this on Dropbox, unfortunately.
Every day GLpics is dead, I miss it more and more. |

I am not really looking into the issue. I just happen to be in contact with Hy and have been taking care of some of the easy admin related housekeeping. Now that people with deeper computer knowledge are on the task, I don't need to be in the loop.
GL: Gah! The door is missing. I can't get inside!
Me: I will... Gah! The door is missing, I can't get inside! ~talks to Hy~
Hy: Shit, here is where you might find the door. ~gives map to several people~
Me: I hope someone can read this map...I really am clueless... |

MNOWAX is right though, Dropbox is very good, both for simple sharing and for versioning and backup across computers, for all kinds of data. |

Hy, and Matt as well as myself are looking into the issues currently going on there. Hy's getting into contact with the hosting service so see if they do have backups.
This is where I highly recommend Dropbox. Yeah, I'm shilling for the site. It's more than just a hosting service, it makes for a great backup for your own PC, you can also use it to host stuff, send things to friends and collaborate on stuff. I use it a lot for my business as well as for personal use. Best Part: FREE.
if you use the link i gave, it gives both myself and the user who signed up an extra 500MB of storage. You start off with 2gb, so you can go up from there.[/url] |

I use gate.com, only because they were cheap way back in 1997 when I first made the site, and I haven't bothered to change. I'm not sure I recommend them terribly, though I'm happy enough. One thing I had to do is to stop using their SMTP for outgoing mail, because they had acquired a reputation as a spam source, and a lot of sites rejected mail coming from them. I send mail through comcast, which is my Internet provider anyway, so I have an account through them by default. I pay $95 / year for the hosting and the domain name registration. (A quick look at GoDaddy and I see they are under $70 / year. Maybe I'll switch.)
Sorry to hear that you lost so much stuff. If there were links to it from GL, then Google Cache probably still has it. Even though I know that gate.com keeps regular backups, I have a complete copy of my site on my own computer, plus there is one on my old computer (in the basement somewhere) as of when I retired it. I highly recommend keeping backups of stuff if you're going to be sad if it's gone. Has anyone checked whether or not the domain host for GLPics has backups that can be restored? |

What service do you use Zag, and what is the cost? I'm willing to pay for my own space. GLPics was super-awesome, though.
It would be totally great if I could somehow recover the stuff I lost. I'm happy to move it eslewhere if needed, but the thought of all that stuff gone makes me sad.
I had over 100 levels of a URL-changing puzzle built, plus the last GL Collaborative Meta-Puzzle, and tons of other cool stuff. |

Well, it's a little late, now, but if any of you have some things that you want to keep available, I'd be glad to put them up on zag.net. I just checked, and my current stats are
Used: 909 MB
Total: 10000 MB
so I have plenty of space, (I have the cheapest package they offer.)
If you have just a few things, you can email them to me. If you have a lot of stuff, I'll give you my FTP password (if I can find it) and you can put it up yourself. |

Bad News
From Hy:
Yeah, I'm not sure what happened. Maybe somebody found a security hole in that file manager, or someone with ftp access random deleted, or the host just dropped files, but it seems like a lot of glpics randomly dropped out of space and time. (including the file manager.)
If either of you wants to spearhead setting up a new file manager, that would be great, otherwise, it will just have to wait until I have some free time.
Let me know if you (or any gler, really, wants to do this.) I don't know what it will entail, but it shouldn't be too bad (though all the user names and passwords seem to be lost.) [=(]
From Me:
So does some GLer want to do this? I don't have the time either |
