| Oops, obviously a major roadblock here - you might not need to know about champagne in Sudden Impact but you certainly need to know something about champagne in general... |

Sorry, guys, I've only just been able to log on...
the second equation in L'lanmal's initial post is using the wrong units, but he mentions the correct ones in the same post. [Technically, of course, if these were 'absolutely' kosher equations it wouldn't matter, but obviously there's a twist... and no, L'lanmal, I had no idea there was any mention of champagne in Sudden Impact! |

| Presumably, part of the issue that 44 is the English unit of measurement (.44 inches), and 1.5 is metric (liters). |

Just to let you know that I won't be able to pick up an internet connection for a few days, so feedback on this might not be very satisfactory...
Because of that I'd like to further clarify my response to l'lanmal's post: the units are important |

| You're definitely on the right track, but the puzzle title is meaningful... |

Thought I was on the right track here, but I'm getting a non-unique answer.
the weapon is a .44 magnum. So A+B+C = 44 and C / (A - B) = 1.5 liters (a magnum of wine, as clued in the title).
This gives three positive integer solutions. I may be using the wrong units for a magnum, as I didn't see an L in the puzzle (51oz? 2 bottles?) or perhaps I am on the wrong track entirely. |

Fizzy problem
(Popular name for 'Sudden Impact' weapon )[part 1] = A + B + C
(Popular name for 'Sudden Impact' weapon )[part 2] = C / (A - B)
where A <> B <> C
What is C?
-- Oscar
NB. Part 1 of popular name is somewhat pointless! |

| Nice work. The puzzle title was intended more as a hint towards the solution process, with Command giving associations to the NATO alphabet. |

OK - still sure I'm missing something but this appears to be the chain:
ze(BRA-VO)c(AL-FA)l(TER-Arquebu(SIER-RA)ndo(M-IKE)(A-REA)so(N-ANO)nymize, where the ZE overlaps completeing the chain. This spells BATSMAN which maybe has something to do with commands?
[edit]I guess it comes from this definition: a person on the ground who uses bats to guide the pilot of an aircraft when taxiing?[/edit] |

I think the word list might be:
Hide names : ANONYMIZE/ANONYMISE
Soldier with long-barreled gun: ARQUEBUSIER
Waver: FALTER
Furniture retailer: IKEA
Arbitrary : RANDOM
Rationality : REASON
Outspoken : VOCAL
Striped animal: ZEBRA
Some words fit together nicely to give members of the NATO call sign alphabet e.g. zeBRA-VOcal, arquebuSIER-RAndoM-IKEa (B, S and M) They are such strong fits that I can't believe they are accidental, but unfortunately, some others can't be forced into this process (ANONYMIZE, FALTER and REASON) so there must be something else going on... |

Based on Novice's strikeouts, it looks like these are the words:
Hide names : ANONYMIZE
Soldier with long-barreled gun: CANNONEER
Waver: FALTER
Furniture retailer: IKEA
Arbitrary : RANDOM
Rationality : REASON
Outspoken : VOCAL
Striped animal: ZEBRA
Since they are in alphabetical order, I think pairing them by length is a dead end. |

Waver : VACILLATE, HESITATE, FALTER

Rationality : REASON, SANITY
Outspoken : VOCAL, BLUNT, CANDID, FORTHRIGHT, FRANK

Note that pairs have the same number of letters, but I'm stuck on finding a 4-letter word for 'waver' that starts with C-I. If you consider them being in alphabetical order so far to be a coincidence, then SWAY fits. |

I think it worked great. I recognized some quotes immediately but thought the wording was a bit off (so I didn't need your hint, really), so I'd say you achieved what you aimed for.
Looking up the original quotes and listing them out was the first thing I was planning to do if I were to find time to sit down with the puzzle. |

You could possibly have adjusted the paraphrasing so that using the initials of the paraphrased Twain quotes still spelled out the desired word - that would have made a very nice echo between using the translated quote with the translated author's name! |

I did, but I wanted to have a second step in solving, and then I realized that the letters of the final answer I wanted to arrive at were within the intermediate answer I ended up using. Did you notice that there are exactly three quotes from each of the people?

I would never have got it without the pointer to the quote site but:
these are slightly paraphrased quotes from brainyquotes.com If you use the initial letter of the original quotes (all from one of Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill or Mark Twain) it spells 'MARKTWAIN' Taking the initials of just the Twain quotes produces an anagram of 'wit'
Very nice! Did you consider spelling 'SAMCLEMENS' or similar? |
