You descend further down the stairs.
It is too dark to see. You think that you can hear the sound of flowing water. |

Well that is odd.
Head down the stairs. |

The minotaur remains on his face.
"I never got her name. It was odd, though - she was clad all in black armor. For all I know she's still down there. |

You head towards the stairs.
The stone minotaur moves to stop you, then suddenly falls on his face.
"Clever" it says. "Only one other person tried that. Most of the others gave me hotfoot... or is it hothoof?" |

| Well the statue is supposed to be a guard. And the challenge is to move the statue. An attempt to freely walk down the stairs may cause the statue to move just to block the way. Which would then cause the challenge to be passed, and the statue would then permit you to descend anway? |

| Oh! So there's somewhere new to go that isn't blocked by the statue? Why didn't you say so? Probably the stairs downwards go below, where there is some way to move the entire floor of this room. (Can you say, "BOOM!"?) |

You examine the floor. It is plain.
You examine the rest of the room. It is plain.
You notice that the stairs leading downwards are not blocked by the minotaur. |

The minotaur's mouth would qualify, though the goal is to move the statue as opposed to breaking it. |

| Are there any indentations on the statue -- say, where the armor joins -- in which the cavity of the indentation has a section that is wider than the opening? Filling something like this with water and freezing it will break granite. |

| Your plan works perfectly up until the point where you have to move the unmoving statue. |

lets try it.
Pour water from a flask on the floor around the statue. Stand back a bit and then cast freezing mists on the water.
Push the statue again. |

| But if the water could seep under the statue, and then freeze, it would expand and maybe count as moving, a bit. |

If he's been stuck down here for all this time it must be ages since he has seen the sun.
Use one of the fancy light spells to create a beautiful sunrise and sunset. |

| Possibly some water on the ground and freeze it. If you can budge him a little bit, enough to get part of him on the ice, it would be slippery enough to enable pushing him farther. |

I don't suppose that there is a block and tackle among our equipment. Some heavy rope and a pulley? (Doing my best Maxwell Smart impression) Would'ja believe a yo-yo with some unusually strong string?
Do we have a freeze spell? Possibly putting some water in the right spot and freezing it would move or crack the statue. |

| The floor under the minotaur looks solid. The minotaur is not standing on a pedestal. The minotaur is not actually connected to the floor. The minotaur appears to be top-heavy. The minotaur's face moves fully, though that does not seem to qualify for solving the room. |

| What does the floor under the Minotaur look like? Also, he's a statue -- does he have a large, solid base like a real statue, or just feet that have turned to stone? Is he actually connected to the floor? It could be that even though he is very heavy, he can be overbalanced fairly easily. Has he moved at all other than his lips? Even that? Is there room to squeeze by him (not that we're doing so, just wondering)? |

Your spear thinks for a moment.
"It's a stone minotaur, so it'll probably be too heavy to move on your own. By the same token, it won't be affected by cold or electricity. We've already tried singing to it - that song was terrible, by the way, don't sing it again - and I don't know enough about minotaur mythology to suggest any sad epics." |
