I agree with the above sentiments wholeheartedly. I'd have posted at the time, but my brain had stopped working thanks to Moffat.
In other news, a story I've been trying to identify for almost 10 years has been found:
The Bamboo Trap, by Robert S. Lemmon. |

I only tried that because glpics has a maximum file size of 1 mb. They showed up for me when I previewed and posted them.
FIXED THEM! |

Those little bits of green in this photo are a Leaf Cutter Ant trail. It went on for at least fifty yards down the trail before veering off into the jungle.

Q, I'm sure you are concerned to overloading us with stuff we might not be interested in. Let me state for the record that I (and, it sounds like, Courk) would be glad for more detail on what you saw, and any anecdotes from the day. |
On Tuesday I returned from nine days in Costa Rica. That place is a birder's paradise. There are as many birds to be seen in that small country as there are in the US and Canada. I saw 130 different birds, though only 98 were new to me. The rest either have huge ranges, like Cattle Egrets, or migrate, like Yellow Warblers and Scarlet Tanagers.
People who aren't avid birders but want to see the native flora and fauna always hope to spot Scarlet Macaws, but often the birds don't cooperate. It began raining early afternoon the first day, as we rented the car, and continued while we drove to the Pacific coast and headed south. After three hours I really needed to stretch my legs. It let up, and there was a turnout overlooking the ocean, so I stopped. No sooner had I gotten out of the car than I saw a dozen Scarlet Macaws in a dead tree about 50 meters away.
We spent four nights in Manuel Antonio. As soon as we got our stuff in from the car I stepped outside with my binoculars. The next bird I saw was a Black-mandibled Toucan. I saw quite a few more birds on the hotel property before we left. Including the hikes in the national park and the wildlife refuge, and the morning catamaran trip I was up to about 35 birds for the trip.
We headed north and took the ferry to the Nicoya Peninsula. There are precious few paved roads here, and the place I had booked for us turned out not to have A/C. Even though it was right by the beach it was difficult to sleep so we drove back to the ferry the next morning and went to Monteverde. It's high in the mountains and has a cloud forest, spectacular scenery and hunreds of birds. I kept track, and from our window or elsewhere on the hotel property I saw 44 birds, including the Keel-billed Toucan. The last day I walked the trail out back and had a troop of about 20 White-faced Capuchins working through the trees above me.
Perhaps the coolest bird I saw was the Chestnut-headed Oropendola. There are more exotic looking birds, but these are about 30 cm. long and weave nests that hang down about four feet from the branch. We encountered a colony with eight of these huge nests.
We went for a guided night tour one evening. We got to see a Two-toed Sloth, a Porcupine, Tarantulas, a green pit viper in a tree, Cane Toads (like Australia has but they originated here), a Nine-banded Armadillo (like Texas has), Agoutis, and a Mottled Owl.
We visited two hummingbird gardens (several feeders with some flowers around the borders) at different elevations. Each had about eight kinds of hummers, with twelve different in all.
It's a beautiful country. The food was great - not at all like Mexican, which I had been expecting it to be. The road was paved to and around Manuel Antonio, but the road up to Monteverde was rocky and rough in spots. I'm glad we weren't there for rainy season, which starts this month but could have started early. |

There was a boy, maybe five years old but I'm a terrible judge of kid's ages so don't take my word for it, sitting a few rows in front of me at church today. At one point I happened to notice him drawing a picture in a notebook (it was a train, fwiw.)
I was a bit surprised that his mother would let him doodle in church, but considering I wrote puzzles in the margin of my university graduation program I guess I don't really have much of a leg to stand on.
Later I saw another page of the notebook and realized that this was much more than a simple doodle. Doodling is something I do mindlessly when I'm bored. Clearly this was not mindless at all, because on the later notebook page I saw the words "The End". |

What made you Euphoric today?
Ah today during the day was most exhausting. I am working a labour position installing 370 meters of 12 yellow dots every 50 mm. Today we finished another ~30 meters. Fortunately paying attention to what is generally going on beside the train track has gotten me a "better" but still back breaking job. But all of that nonsense just left me tired and not happy.
But after dinner and the sweet feeling of putting my legs up on the couch and massaging my tired muscles. The evening for most people would have ended there! Alas, I have made the effort to get down to the pottery studio every night and I had two lids to finish. Making work that has to be finished the next day forces me to drive down there.
Apparently there was a class on Tuesday nights. I don't really know when the classes meet and was told I could work through them anyways. It was also their last session-- complete with finished glazed pottery, food, and wine. At the university studio in Fairbanks alcohol was strongly discouraged... so having potters juice in the studio is a welcome change! The class was a cheerful bunch and a few of them watched me finish making the lids.
There are many approached to lids. Currently I have been throwing the base and a lid with clay to trim away. Both pieces are set to dry together with corn starch on the rim. The excess clay is trimmed away and then a lump of soft clay is added. This lump is then centered and shaped into a knob. It is fun but also time consuming process. So now after a glass of wine I am Happy
It gets better. Somewhere in the depth of daydreams or the night I came up with an idea. It starts with throwing a narrow and tall cylinder (the basic starting point for everything except bowls). Tall and narrow is difficult for me; I have thick wide hands. This one came out very nicely. Oh, and another glass of wine! So after cleaning up the cylinder I would attempt to pull two sides of the entire cylinder upward. This technique is commonly used to make spouts. Then I pinched the top of the cylinder mostly closed leaving just a pinkie-sized hole.
Working the thin cylinder naturally deflates it quite a bit. After adding a few gesturing pulls the magic of re-inflating the piece by blowing into the hole. Mmm the gritty taste of clay. The expression of the piece was really starting to take shape with the elegance of a headless dancer. After letting the clay stiffen a bit with a hair dryer, A head was added. I used a cylinder of clay in the lumped fashion similar to lids earlier today. (Next time I think I will use a second wheel to form the head.) Making a round head was difficult because of the stubby arms of the pulled+pinched clay getting in the way. With a little more smoothing tomorrow the dancing lady shape will be as fine as I imagined.
Three really good hours make a day perfect.
On the refrigerator at the studio there is a magnet with the phrase "Celebrate until further notice" |

This may belong in "What confused you today?"
I had been dieting since July and lost over 45 pounds and then after New Year's, for some reason I just stopped. I wouldn't say I was binge eating, but I was definitely not following through with my life changes. At my lowest, I was 183.4, and a few weeks ago I stepped on the scale and was a bit less than 189. 5 pounds ain't horrible, but it was my first slip up.
So...I didn't step on the scale for a couple of weeks. And yesterday I decided that I needed to go back to what I was doing before, so I stepped on the scale this morning to see what the final damage was. I doubted it could have been a 10 pound gain from my low, but I supposed it could have been.
183.0. My all-time low. I stepped on the scale five times and then got on a different scale to make sure.
My body is weird. |
