The polls been up long enough, so I declare "Extremist, branching out, hangs on to Communist beginnings" the winner with 3 votes.
Zag would you like to pick a new word? I'll update the title thread later. |

It's not a very good clue (you may object!)...
RADICAL: Advanced tyre includes carbon
It uses a British spelling of a specific word...just in case you're confused. |

I see I had the same idea for structure as Zag and DejMar. I think DejMar's clue is pretty nice.
I disagree with Scurra's criticism of Novice's clue. I think that's fair, and clever. |

This was a hard word to clue. Here's my attempt:
Obscure firm takes up work to identify Israeli sites. (8)
Obscure = Twilight (adj.)
firm = tight
takes up = containment indicator
work = W
to identify Israeli (web) sites = IL

And there I was hoping that everyone would resist that particular line of approach.
Side-discussion for later: I think that "Swan" needs to be capitalised, but that would stop the clue from working.... |

TWILIGHT:
Dusk, with light; take hydrogen: fuse. (8)
Dusk is the synonym.
"with light", taking an H away, is wit light, fuse indicates to mix the letters, receiving twilight.
Almost an &lit, since twilight is dusk, but with some light still left, which the sun makes by fusing hydrogen is how the sun makes light during twilight. |

TWILIGHT

T(WIL[l])IGHT = the evening
TIGHT = close
containment indicator : embraces
WIL = will, cut short |
