| Well, Scurra only won by 1 point after 2 bouts of extra questions but it was mainly a question of when the chasing pack would lose ground. |

That is one of the questions that people (here, anyway) would be proud to not know.
I spotted the connection in one of my random trawls around the internet and thought it would be suitable. |

Excellent quizing by all! Most excellent fun too! Thanks for running the quiz 3iff!
But I have to say that I'm proud of the fact that I missed the extra point question:
4. Patricia "Pattie" Mallette is the mother of which pop artist?
Although now that I know her name it will forever be cursed to be in my brain... |

I can't believe I lasted as long as I did. I only wanted to do as well as Zag. We were pretty much neck and neck until the final tiebreaker, which he aced while I missed four.
Good job, Scurra! |

And I clearly had a lucky hit on the second set of tie-breaks, where one of my two guesses came up for me.
Thanks for the excellent quiz - as ever with things like this, they are only easy if you know them. I knew far too many of them. |

Congrats Scurra. Thanks for the game 3iff. Extra time questions weren't easy at all, I just had an extension to the flukiness of the guesses I made, which had also largely been responsible for my getting that far anyway.
Flukiness ran out in the end, well done Scurra for a deserved win. |

At least these questions proved tougher and we eventually found a winner.

5 Isauteikisa (only 10 questions answered)
No extra-time answers received from Isauteikisa but that couldn't have affected the outcome.
So Scurra narrowly gets victory over a determined Dented Ford with Zag claiming third place. That means Scurra retains the title and will probably be amending his signature to account for this latest victory.
Thanks to everyone for their prompt answers and the small band of players who continued playing even when they were eliminated.
Hope you enjoyed it. |

Olympiad III - Round 5
1. Converting the roman numeral XC to binary gives which answer? (NO CALCULATORS!)
a. 0111100
b. 1011010
c. 1100100
d. 1101110
XC = 90 in decimal and converts to 1100100 in binary.
2. Mount Rushmore national monument is in which US state?
a. Colorado
b. Nevada
c. South Dakota
d. Wyoming
3. In the film "Citizen Kane", Kane takes control of which newspaper?
a. Boston Telegraph
b. Daily Planet
c. L.A. Tribune
d. New York Inquirer
The Daily Planet is where Clark Kent works.
4. Who wrote the lyrics for the theme tune of the original series of Star Trek?
a. Alexander Courage
b. Neil Diamond
c. Gene Roddenberry
d. William Shatner
e. The song has no lyrics
Gene Roddenberry secretly wrote lyrics to the tune from Alaexander Courage in order to claim 50% of the royalties. The lyrics are never used in the show. They're dreadful.
5. Which game did Tarn Adams create?
a. Angry Birds
b. Dwarf Fortress
c. Minecraft
d. Tetris
A primitive and obscure game, a bit similar to Hack or Rogue, certainly in game interface. Only 2 right answers.
6. Felix Baumgartner, the man who jumped from space in October 2012 is of which nationality?
a. American
b. Austrian
c. Canadian
d. German
7. How many different English scrabble letters are worth 1 point.
a. 9
b. 10
c. 11
d. 12
e. 13
One player did the calculation a number of times and kept getting different answers. His eventual guess was right.
The letters are: AEIOULNRST
8. Water boils at 100°C (212°F) at sea level (standard pressure). At what temperature will water boil at the top of Everest?
a. 72°C (162°F)
b. 86°C (187°F)
c. 100°C (212°F)
d. 108°C (226°F)
There's a formula for calculating the boiling point dependant on how far above sea level you are. Due to the decreased air pressure, water boils at 72°C but would give you lukewarm tea or coffee.
9. The chemical symbol for Strontium is?
a. S
b. Sn
c. Sr
d. St
10. Which letter is represented by the morse code sequence "- . . -" (that's dash,dot,dot,dash)?

These are going to be tougher...I hope.

Olympiad III - Round 5 - it's Fergie time
We have a tie on 9 correct, so ALL final players can have another 5 questions in a bid to find a winner. It's quite possible that someone on less than 9 can sweep past the leaders.
7 of you are still in the battle. Good luck.
In the event that we still have a tie after this round, anyone who is 6 or more behind the leaders will be eliminated and then we'll have another 5 questions.
Answers will be provided once we have a winner.
1. The patron saint of physicians is?
a. St Joseph

Olympiad III - Round 5 - The Final
As this is the final round, some rules change. It's now high score wins. If the top spot is tied, there will be an additional 5 questions that everyone can answer which will be added to your overall score, so it's possible to be in third place after the first set of 10 then score all 5 of the next 5 and win the game (assuming the leaders do badly on the next 5 questions). A winner will be declared once someone has more correct answers than everyone else.
7 of you are in the battle. Good luck.
Watch out for some questions having 5 options.

5. The 1987 film "Three Men and a Baby" was directed by who?
a. Jonathan Frakes
b. Leonard Nimoy
c. William Shatner
d. Patrick Stewart
One of the harder questions. I'm surprised this caught quite a few. Only Nimoy and Frakes have directed (as far as I'm away) and all are major characters from Star Trek (original or TNG series)

A perfect number is a positive integer that is equal to the sum of its proper positive divisors
The second perfect number is 28 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14. (from wikipedia).

Scurra charges ahead. I would probably need to have 10 sports questions to derail him. Zag also scores 9, just beaten back by another flag question, and Dented Ford also managed 9. Four players scored an impressive 8.
A relatively easy round as most players scored between 7 and 9 with an average of 7.7. I need to get some tough questions!
Jedo had a 'fun' entry and scored 5.
It would be extremely harsh to eliminate those who scored 7 so they battle on.
This round sees off esme.

Ok, I'll have to wait for him, although I could technically continue as one player may or may not be eliminated this round depending on what score Quailman makes.
I'll leave this until Thursday before I decide what to do. |
