It's nearly three years overdue but I feel I must do the thing I had promised in '07 and give a hearty congratulations to N-Z. A credible effort on their part, making sure the page sunk into obscurity, it was on page 6 when I bumped it so it had to be on page 4 at some point.
Well done, N-Z, remember that I count as part of the winning team as my name starts with a T.
I do remember my early days when I had made stupid threads like these.
Again, congratulations all of you, from Neo to Zag! |

Well, I tried, but what really annoys me is the title of the thread being changed.
Why did that happen? |

| Well, that's up for debate. It seems you're T hok, IE The Hok. But what is a Hok? I don't know but I don't like the sound of it. If it were Hawk, well that'd be cool. But hok sounds like a bad cough or something. So, in your case I think the The should be dropped. Now you're just Hok and you're in the filth that is A-M, and you probably enjoy it. |

Yes, this thread may have pissed off some people (I saw your thread in site problems...). Neo was editting post instead of posting because posting would bump the thread. However, he was clear about his edits- he was not trying to be malicious.
And this thread will be moved back to VSN tomorrow and this special forum will be deleted. |

Ha ha! I'm posting in this thread, and NOT bumping it! Lets see it stay at the top of VG NOW!
Besides, this game isn't at all fair. Us latter-half alphabet names are getting hosed. Page 4 of VG? That stuff is two years old!
It doesn't matter though, because I win.

If he can get it to page 13 it's easy to get it to page 4, but I think that getting it to 13 is enough |

You haven't won. You have to get it on page 4 to win, not page 4 or below.
Sure I have. I just won 3.25 times over. I got a little carried away. If it was on page 13, then at some point, it was on page 4.

For that matter, our usernames are rather flimsy identifications in any case. I'm sure I've registered a N-Z username at some point in the past.
I'm waiting for Samadhi or Neo to lock the thread... |

They do typically live in warm coastal areas. They don't have much fat to keep themselves warm, so they need warm water to stay warm. They do live in fresh water, such as springs, and even warm water outlets of power plants.
Some manatees travel quite a distance. At least one was found up in Chesapeake Bay. They named him Chessie. He eventually made his way to Connecticut. Another manatee made its way over to Texas. Neither of those were very smart moves as those waters get colder than Florida's. |

Thanks Courk. What about the range of a manatee? I get the impression that they're shallow water, tidal estuary and coastal area dwellers, rather than deep-sea creatures. (Hence the high incidence of motorboat injury.)
Do they come into fresh water areas? Do they venture far out to sea? |

There is indeed a difference between dugongs and manatees. This cartoon is wrong. It does show dugongs, but dugongs are not manatees.
The most obvious difference is the tail. Manatees have a rounded tail while dugongs have a fluked tail. As you pointed out, another difference is their location. Dugongs are around the Indian Ocean and Australia, while manatees are around the Caribbean, the Amazon, Florida, and parts of Africa.
They do share similarities, though. Both are called sea cows, and both are in the order Sirenia.
There also used to be another member of that order, Steller's Sea Cow. It lived in much more northerly areas around Alaska. It was big, but sadly went extinct 27 years after its discovery. Info Link
If you look at a manatee's flipper, you can see toe nails similar to those of an elephant. Manatees and elephants are related to each other. Manatees have no natural predators, thus don't have any sort of defenses. Motorboats are hazards to manatees. Scars from motorboat and other encounters are so predominant that individual manatees are identified by their scars. My more recent adoptees have come with maps of their scars. |

It was pretty funny, but really, it was hardly worth it. I don't see what positive action that the N-Z team can take to make the topic sink. It's a lot harder to bump four pages worth of topics up than is a credible effort, and the only danger in letting the topic slip might be allowing it to fall out of the top ten through silliness, not because it would be hard to prevent.
So, manatees... Is there a significant difference between a manatee and a dugong, or is that just the difference between a Pacific and an Atlantic version of the same creature? |
