Pi raised a question about the actual "last" name of this individual. Some of the websites seemed to give conflicting information, so I e-mailed a GL member, Nepali (guess where he lives), and I got this reply:

quote:
Hello,

I don't really know about an American phone directory, but in a Nepali phone directory, I think Tenzin(g) Norgay Sherpa would appear as Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, because the official surname for these people in Nepal is Sherpa.

As to which of Tenzin(g) and Norgay is the family name, Tenzin is certainly a name given by the parents and it means "good supporter" or something like that, so Norgay must be a family name of sorts (It is actually quite confusing because it turns out that the names of two of his children are Jamling Tenzing Norgay and Norbu Tenzing.) Sherpas mostly name their children according to the day on which they are born, but apparently, neither Tenzin nor Norgay is one of the seven names that might be given in such a way.

Here are some links you might find helpful:

Now I'm more confused. It appears we may all be wrong and his last name was Sherpa. ???
