*Steps out of long lurking phase*

I am going to college on the 17th! A number of other members (Mercuria?) are probably going too. What wisdom do you past or current college students/attendees have for us Freshmen. I have to keep a 3.5 to keep my full-tuition scholarship, so any good advice will help. Naturally, I will do the opposite of anything Hy says.

Also, I am curious where GLers go to college. When you post, post your school.

I will be attending Abiline Christian University in Abliline, Texas as a Computer Major.

oui... i'm going to virginia tech on the 25th, and classes start on the 27th. i've got engineering orientation on the 26th ;p

oh, i'm in general engineering, but that's only because tech requires all first year engineering students to ge. i'm going into ece (ee and computer engineering), most likely for cpe (computer engineering), but i'm gonna see how hard it'll be to double. who knows...

I am graduating from Virginia Tech this December, hopefully (~keeping my fingers cross)

Advice: If you ever run into any kind of troubles, don't hestitate asking the professors for help (you have nothing to lose). Don't be shy, just call them up or go to their offices and explain to them your situation. I've had bad experience in the past where if I'd just talk to my professors about it, it wouldn't have been as bad.

Keep up with the assignments during the semester. Don't put work off until the end. If you discipline yourself, final exam time won't be nearly as stressful for you as it is for those around you who are cramming and pulling all-nighters.

ViinyQ's advice is the best. Communicate with your professors. If they know you give a damn, it can make the difference when your grade might be borderline.

My advice is to do the homeowrk. I had a tendency to not do homeowrk or not put any effort into it. This killed my grades. HW is usually 10 - 15% of a grade - so you are starting off with a B+/A- at best.
Plus doing the HW helps you prepare for a test.

Your only hope is to keep your door locked, your eyes straight ahead, and respond to no greetings. If make the grave mistake of making friends you can through the GPA right out the window. Friends are always trying to get you to go out and have fun and stuff. How dare them.

Oh, and go ahead and through out your computer, too. It is also an unneeded distraction.

Good luck... you'll need it.

I go to Penn State, so I've had lots of practice at trying to balane school, work, and a life. Remember that your classes are important, but don't get too wrapped up in it, make sure you have some down time to relax. That doesn't necessarily mean partying, but at least take some breaks from studying. If you get bored because your classes aren't challenging enough, or for whaterver reason you just have too much time on your hands, get involved. Join clubs, a fraternity (business or social) or get a job. When you have too much time, is when you get used to sitting around doing nothing, and that can cause your coursework to suffer just as much as if you are trying to do too much. Plus when you graduate, those connections can prove to be very valuable.

My classes started yesterday...

For those searching, visit the school if at all possible beforehand. Ther's no point to going to a school you're going to despise for 4 years.

Keeping up with the assignments is definately a good plan, but you do need to make some friends. I'd recommend setting aside Friday night for parties/hanging out. If you don't do this once in a while, you will burn out.
