Oh BTW ... way to go Greece, but I couldn't work out for the life of me which team the coach (Otto somebodiopolus) supported.

I agree, Rooney was the shining light up front, he looked like Shearer did a few years ago, picking the ball up deep and running at the defense, something Owen can only do with lesser inexperienced defences imho.
Campbell and King did an excellent job, and and you said, the chuckle brother was mediocre at best. Cole had some problems on his side but seemed to cope with them well. Imo, Beckham was under par in his performance and the penalty he took was just a welly at goal with no positioning, look at the difference between ZZ's and Beckhams penalties, a total class apart.
Scholes defended well in midfield but his passing play was shite. Lamps did well and supported the front and back and scored a brilliant goal to-boot.
Heskey? Who's he? Never liked him, never will. Taking Rooney off put England into defensive mode as Vassel had no running support up front and Lumpy was there to do his usual falling over and lumpyness. That tackle he did to give the free kick away was so childish, my mum could have done a better tackle, but then thats lumpy all over.
As for Gerrard, well, he played quite well I thought until that moment of madness at the end. I really wanted him to be interviewed after the match so he could say why he did it. James had really no choice but to risk a red and take Henry out, but looking at it again today, I believe he could have just come out and not committed himself that soon, letting Henry try to go around him as King was rushing in to defend the line. All in the past now though, on to the Swiss.

Actually, Otto's German...
He (Otto Rehagel) has worked on most German teams (Werder Bremen, Borussia, Bayern Munchen, Kaiserslautern) and even won a Cup Winners Cup with Werder in 1992.

And I don't care which team he supports as long as we keep winning...

I agree too. I haven't seen Rooney much since I rarely watch the Premiership and he hasn't been in CL yet. I was impressed with his performance and I think he can take the role of a single attacker if England ever tries a 4-5-1 with fast wingers instead of having Owen running around doing nothing particular.
And don't get me started on Heskey...

Italy and Sweden should have an easy evening tonight...

My local lad Ricky Hatton successfully defended his title again on Saturday, but I'm not sure if it was on Sky. Hopefully soon they'll give him a shot at a worthwhile belt.

I think I have 5 additional points for the draw between Croatia and Switzerland... What a bummer for the brits though. To be up 1-0 and to lose in injury time.

The Danes are gonna have a hard time. The temperature is 33c and the pitch is soft, everything in favour of Italy.

If the Danes can hold tight on the defense and play out to their wingers going forward, I reckon they have half a chance. I still say their best chance of qualifing is beating the Swedes and the Bulgars, taking Italy for a draw would be marvelous.

Italy 0
Denmark 0

A nil nil draw from one of the most exciting games so far. A game of two goalkeepers and Danish majority posession. Over all I suppose a draw was fair in the end for both goalkeepers, especially the way they saved the game for their teams. Sørensen was outstanding and just gets the nudge, imho, over Buffon as man of the match. The Danes did well as a tight team containing the Italian attack, problem was that they never really had the bulk up front to score, several times they flapped around instead of just hoofing the ball goalwards.
Great game though.

Sweden 5
Bulgaria 0

Not really a true respective on the match itself. Until Sweden scored their first goal, the Bulgars had a few missed chances. They really missed a Stoichkov(sp) type person on the pitch to command the passing side. Even when the Swedes went 3 - 0 up, the Bulgars still fought for the attack, they were just unlucky that the Swedes got a few quick goals in. The Bulgars deserved a couple of goals on their performance but it just was not to be. I feel for Petrov, he worked hard and came away with nothing, bless him.
This puts the group open for some good future matches.

So, how long do these game things go on? Are we talking a couple weeks or all summer...? I need to know how much I have to spread out my enthusiasm; I can only have so much, and I don't want to be unmotivating at a crucial time! (Go team!)

Missed the Sweden match, but saw the Italy/Denmark game. The two saves that the Danish keeper made back to back were the highlight of the tournament so far. The Italians were a little disappointing but I'm sure will get better and better (as is their way).

Can't wait for tonights Holland v Germany match. I don't know what to expect. Write off the Germans at your peril. I believe I'm right when I say the last time these two met was in the 1990 World Cup, so Rudi Voeller (Geman Coach) has a score to settle, I'm sure he still feels Rikjard(sp) spittle every time he runs his hand through his hair.

Duph,

Interesting fact I read yesterday:
Every time Germany and Holland meet in a major tournament, one or both of them go to the finals:

WC 74 Germany-Holland final 2-1
WC 78 Germany-Holland in the second round, Holland final
EC 80 Germany-Holland First round, Holland final
WC 90 Germany-Holland in the second round, Germany final
EC 92 Germany-Holland First round, Germany final

And it's Rijkaard

Does anyone know a site where I can download the highlights? Without paying for it of course, I'm cheap

Jester -

if you go to the BBC then click on the team/match you want, you should be able to find the goals/highlights that you can stream. They're only short, but if you want to see the goals it's okay.

If you want any of the Holland matches taping, I'd be happy to do so.(Unless it costs a fortune to post a video- I'm cheap too). You'd probably know the result long before it arrived though.

Ooooo, Latvia one up against the Czechs, marvelous.
Tonight I'm going to a friends house to watch the Clogs and the Krauts. He's having a 'Gouda and Bratwurst' football party with Grolsch, Lowenbrau, Schnapps, De Kuyper Oranjebitter and a pletheral of foreign grub.

Thanks for the BBC link, at least they have audio commentary, which is better then the text play by play on the official site.

2-1 for Czech over Latvia from the look of things. Since I don't have Flash at the office, not play-by-play. Does someone know if this is the final score or if they are still playing?

The performance of Holland was goddamn awful. They were lucky to get a draw, thanks to an unbelievable equialiser by van Nistelrooy after good work by van der Meyde (incidentally the two who were amongst the worst players on the field yesterday evening).

*glares at archnemesis, dethwing* I'll get you, my pretty, and your little good-for-nothing team too!

So, finals are on July 4th. Great timing for those backyard picnickers who drag the television outside to "watch the game." I guess that's normally for baseball, but football/soccer works too!

Hey, and who but the Americans could have decided to take a game's name and make a completely different sport with it? Sigh, what a mischance of birth for me :/

Go team!

I was really looking forward to the Holland/Germany game, but felt a little short changed. So far, with the possible exception of France, all the teams have played and I haven't seen any real quality. I think Germany would've been happy with the point before the game, but the way the Dutch played I feel the 3 points should've gone to Germany. Not that the Germans played well, but they were the better organised team (just). Nistlerooy proved once again how great a striker he is *says through clenched teeth*, he had absolutley no service and the one cross he does have to deal with, he turns in for a fantastic goal (but why the long face Ruud?). The two subs livened up the game a bit (van Hoojdonk (sp) and Schweinnenger (sp)). Anyway....disappointing.

Heinz looked good for the Chechs. In fact the Chechs had some quality players. Porborsky really surprised me.

Normally I have a bit of a soft spot for Spain, but I'll be cheering Greece on tonight...I'd rather meet them in the next round.(Shouldn't speak to soon, we've still got two matches to win)

Holland/Germany showed how un-attacking it is when playing the lone striker. Yes Germany were the better side but only because of midfield play and free kicks (Cocu should be slapped today by the whole team), very very few chances fell to each teams striker throughout the game, until that is when Van Hoy sin sauce came on in support of horse face. Up to that point Germany deserved the win, not through attacking play, more through good ball control, positioning and patient play. Bollock had quite a good game for the Krauts, especially since the mauling he got in the German press for being selfish and a non-team palyer.
For the Dutch, no one really stood out but it was the best move getting old man Edgar off, he was bloody diabolical, well past his sell by date.

Amazing performance by underdog Greece, who now look almost certain to proceed to the second stage.
