To all newbies who are considering joining a mafia, please take the time to read up on mafia! The site at Mafiascum.net has information on roles. Mith's mafia message board is at www.mafiascum.net/phpbb2/index.php [it's down at the moment though ]. The more you read, the smoother the game will go, and the less chance you will make a mistake costing you your life. Here is a list of games on this board to read:

FINISHED MAFIA THREADS:
Mafia 45
Mafia 43 - Bladerunner Mafia
Mafia 42 - Wheel of Time mafia
Verbose Mafia
Mafia Invitational
Mafia 39
Mafia 38
Mafia 34 - Pokemafia!

CURRENTLY RUNNING MAFIAS
Mafia 48, Vampires and Werewolves and Mafia, oh my!
Newbie Mafia 6
Mafia 50 - The Salem Witch Trials
Simpsons Mafia
Return of the Jedi Mafia

This post was probably for my benefit since I am in two games and screwed up in both!

The mafiascum.net site is down. At least I haven't been able to access it in a few days.

If you want information on roles, you can go to Mafiascum.net like Werebear said. But the Message Board has another URL. You can also click on the forums link on the Mafiascum.net page to reach the board. While posting this, the server is down, but I hope it will be fixed soon.

Actually, what irks me more than anything is lack of participation. If you plan on not being around for some time or plan to abandon the game, let the mod know and be replaced.

I have seen many good (and bad) games totally be murdered by lack of participation. Werebear, I expect a 3 page dicertation over this matter.

So I make mistakes too. And I thought you weren't allowed to talk! Anywhere! For a week! *grin* Maybe we could have one of our erstwhile mods to make another permanent message at the top of this forum entitled "READ THIS IF YOU WANNA PLAY MAFIA", and include the links? This might save on newbie questions. Maybe also encourage talking among those not too drunk to speak, like jadesmar. You lucky dog.

Another question: What is an insane/sane cop?

A sane cop is just a normal cop. An insane cop gets the opposite answers (I believe), so if the person he checked was innocent, then he would be told "guilty", and if the person was guilty, he would be told "innocent".

There are actually four DEFINED cops:

Normal - you find bad guys guilty, and good guys innocent.
Paranoid - Everyone's guilty.
Naive - Everyone's not guilty
Insane - Either you find bad guys not guilty and good guys guilty, or you get a completely random answer.

Cops:

Normal: get correct
Insane: get reversed
Paranoid: get guilty
Naïve: get innocent
Random/Lazy: coin flip
Retired: activated when a Cop dies, acquire his sanity.

Oh, one other thing you might add to general info - if you're playing mafia, don't be thin skinned. Translation: Be prepared to be put upon, doubted, and called ludicrous, and have your opinions publicly torn apart. It's just a game, and people aren't really out to get you. Except for me, I'm a bloodthirsty ravener looking for a kill, right, IS? *Grin*

Another question for the more experienced:

In a smallish game (i.e. 4 mafia, two cops, two docs), what would the strategy be for a cop who identified a mafia early on? Would the cop come out and point out the mafia and then ask for protection from the docs?

I have a question(s)....

In some scenarios, a townsperson (known or not) can be (temporarily) lynch-proof.

Assuming that this were/were not known to the rest of the town and that they don't know the length of the term of immunity, is it possible this person to be helpful?

Wouldn't this person (even if it were for one lynch only) be annoying to the town? - If they are not determined to be innocent (which is likely), how should the town cope with this?

---As a known lynch-proof would have to be targeted by the Mafia for them to win, what should a revealed lynch-proof (through attempted/failed lynching) do?

N.B. I've not been in this situation yet. I'm just curious about tactics.

This statement may/may not be ambiguous.

If a cop finds a mafia... that's a tough one. Trading a cop for a mafia is an incredibly bad trade. The only way that works is if there's docs to protect the cop, then it's a race how fast the mafia can find the docs and kill them vs. how fast the cop can investigate. Check out the Magic:The Gathering mafia to see the clearest example of this. Of course, if you're a paranoid cop, coming out early is a BAD thing, just ask Arthur Wilkins in the Salem Witch mafia (50), who got a judge lynched, then got killed by the madman. I think the best method is to make sure your votes reflect your research, bide your time, and when the time comes, come out and pray for protection.

If you are a cop and have found a mafia member, I woul always recommend pointing the FOS at that person and carry on voting for others in the game.

The mafia wont kill you because if they do, the town will see you are a cop and then look at your FOS. I've done this tactic many times and it never fails... well only rarely
