VOTE!!!

Background
Many Years ago, Baltimore had a team named the Colts. One day they moved to Indiana, leaving Baltimore without a football team to cheer for. Then, many years later, there was a team in Cleveland named the Browns, despite the fact that their helmets were orange. Their owner was a mean person named Art Modell who decided to move his team to Baltimore, giving the Baltimorians a team to cheer for, but removing the beloved Browns from their city. Cleveland, however, put up a fight. They refused to let Baltimore's new team be called the Baltimore Browns, so Cleveland, Art Modell, and the NFL made a deal. After a few years without a team, Cleveland would get an expansion team, and Cleveland would get to keep the name and logo (or lack there of). But sadly, said the NFL, the former Browns would have to move to Baltimore and be called the Ravens forevermore. Years later, when Cleveland finally got a team, they formed a fierce rivalry against the Ravens. The Browns hated the Ravens even more than they hated their normal rivals - the Pittsburg Steelers.

This leads us to today, where we have
Art Modell, the serial killer
The Steelers, evil mafia members
The Browns, goods towns people who act as Docs and Cops
The Colts, who unite together as Masons to stop the spread of team relocation
and The rest of the NFL, who, as innocent townies, attempt to stop Art Modell and the Steelers so that our heroes, the Browns, can play football in peace.

Rules
Every player has been assigned a team, a player, and a role. Really, the only important information is your role, but I'd like to see players refer more to their player and team. ie. "Don't lynch me, I'm Bob Smith from the Twins!" instead of "No no, I'm a doc!" Obviously, not all 32 teams were used. Some teams were used more than once. Every player has a unique football player assigned to them.

In that case Vote: Internal Strengler. Werebear buys Saturns 5's and I'm not having him punted down a mineshaft until he's had a few drinks.

~ Opens PortaBar(tm). "Get your Staurn 5's here". New recipe: 4 oz Winter Warmer, juice of stewed jockstrap, 2 measures of pepsi, one of orabge juice. Top up with Florida Swamp Water and Blue Curacao in equal measure. Serve with ice, lemon and a paper umbrella.

~ Clears space next to concession for burger bar; erects sign "Reserved". Starts BBQ to help out for later.

and btw will someone explain to me why you're allowed to make a forward pass. That's ludicrous.

Jeez, I just checked some of the rosters. How can you play football if you weigh 320 lbs? No wonder you have to stop for 5 minutes after every minute of play, and swap your players over every 2nd play. Typical Americans, getting paid for sitting and watching your mates passing the ball forwards. In rugby League, play can continue non-stop for 10 or 12 minutes at a time, and a team consists of 13 players, all of whom are playing, and you can't make forward passes. Now that's what I call a proper football game.

monologue to be continued .....

You know what Chien? I don't care what your rugby "football" is like, Ok? Here in America, we have equal opportunities for everyone, be it 200 lb. running back or 400 lb. defensive end. Now, not another peep out of you

I hope Courk lets me break the curfew exceptionally to defend football, since the 350 lb are as important of a player than the 200 lb ones, they just have different jobs (and kickers should get more respect). Additionally, the "5 minutes breaks after every minute" thing is OVERLY exaggerated. Since this is a strategic game, teams have a short time to decide what to do next. Football is not 22 players and a ball; football is 22 players, a ball and a clock.

That's all I wanted to say. Back to sleep.

Free hot dogs to the first person to explain to me why:

a) Footballers wear so much padding (rugby players dont need it)?
b) Footballers have to have a break every couple of minutes?
c) Is it called football? Surely it should be called throw the ball into the hands of your colleagues before they throw themsleves to the floor

a) It's tough to get Nike and Pepsi deals if you look as mangled as rugby players do
b) It's a strategy thing. It gives us time to do more than run hither and yon, scrambling and trying to gouge each other's eyes out. Which also detracts from the Nike and Pepsi deals.
c) Because we wanted to piss off the rest of the world, who refuse to admit that what they play is soccer.

Actually, I like watching rugby and soccer as much as "throw the ball into the hands of your colleagues before they throw themsleves to the floor" (TTBITHOYCBTTTTTF)

Rugby player have serious injuries, and football players would do if they didn't get protected. Protections help the game

quote:

b) Footballers have to have a break every couple of minutes?

Pay attention to the clock(s). Game usually goes on, unless a timeout was conceded. They are not stopping, they are still playing. The talks among all teammates on the field (called "huddles") are part of the game, and a crucial one, since they help the team to work as one, and not 11 individuals.

quote:

c) Is it called football? Surely it should be called throw the ball into the hands of your colleagues before they throw themsleves to the floor

No, it shouldn't. Football has more than that. The reason it's called football is an historical one. In this game, years ago, feet were more commonly used (to the point a field goal was worth more than a touchdown). The game underwent a process of rules changes to encourage passing, but the game's name didn't change.

These are three of the most usual questions made by people who don't understand football.

Football is a very physical game. It is also extremely technical, with each play drawn up having multiple ways to proceed depending on the defense. The quarterback's job is to get the ball into the endzone and score points. The '5 minute break in between plays' is VERY exaggerated. Actually, there is a 35 second play clock that starts when the referee places the ball in it's spot. The offense then has 35 seconds to snap the ball.

Football players have to be strong, quick, and have stamina. Most have to be intelligent also, as both the offensive and defensive schemes have to be memorized.

Soccer you just kick the ball around. And if you bump into someone, play is stopped and you get a 'free kick'.

Pleeease.

All set. May I remind everyone that I am a newbie (to mafia at least) and although I have read the rules, I am not entirely clear on everything and I hope to learn as we go on without screwing up everyone else's fun.

Oh, and I wanted to clear up the major difference between American football and soccer football:

There is a women's World Cup, but no women's Super Bowl.

Jeep, that is PRECISELY why I refuse to join a fantasy football league. I watch my neighbor root for players playing against his team... and get mad when his team defends well enough. Simplicity is fine for me.

And... vote: IS for his obvious mafia tactics. A three-year-old could see what he's doing. Quick, someone get me a three-year-old, I can't make heads or tails of what he's doing.
