Greetings Moderators, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that our host, Pair Networks, has doubled our server disk allocation at no charge from 200 MB to 400MB.

The bad news is that our average daily usage last month was 418MB, of which about 320MB was in the Forums.

So just a friendly reminder to Moderators to try and keep their Forum byte counts down by purging old threads.

Thanks for all your efforts in keeping the Forums running smoothly.

I have an idea that may save us some space at the sacrafice of cpu.

Right now the threads are stored as html. These load faster, but take up an astronomical amount of space. If the code were rewritten to build the pages on the fly, the cpu usage would increase, but the server space would decrease. I'm not sure how much CPU usage would increase, but I have seen other boards which load the pages dynamically.

code:

Space taken by HTML:
102,473,302 - VSP
84,193,033 - OT
69,849,180 - VSG
256,515,515 - TOT

Space taken by threads:
13,918,743 - VSP
15,430,811 - OT
11,278,913 - VSG
40,628,467 - TOT

That's the current space being taken up by the html and the thread files. Switching ubb to this new format would save that much space. Also users would be able to customize the look of the forums. For example, one user might want to only see ten posts on a page, while another wants to see sixty. These features wouldn't have to be built in, but they could if we wanted them to.

Just an idea.

Another idea that would decrease size is to use server side includes for the header and footer. Of course if your server doesn't support these, it's not possible.

Whilst you are sorting that out Hy, removing some old rubbish is a good idea anyway...

The problem with that is that I don't think it deletes the html.

I could be wrong... let me try an experiment before I post this.

Well I tried it, it deleted it.

Weird. [=

When I die, I ask only one thing; I want to go quietly in my sleep like my grandfather did, not like the other three passengers in his car who were screaming in terror.
