Luna: Yeah, being showered with animals is more common, certainly (it seems everyone has a special animal they're giving away, these days) but chainsawings have occured more than a few times - enough to inspire B&BC to make this lovely picture, at least.
extro: You're one to talk - you only registered a month ago ! |

In blueberry coolpop's own words, "It was a ******* joke, you moron" - "moron" of course being you, Sofis .
I guess that's the image I get too, when I see your name these days. (isn't that "image when you see my name" joke just a little bit old? Was it ever funny? )
(winky faces inserted reluctantly and for political correctness only.)

Uh, Buzzsaw, are you possibly being a little defensive? It's not like Sofis started ranting about how your thread was going to single-handedly bring down the GL, he merely mentioned it in order to demonstrate that the chainsawing thing does, indeed, happen.
And I fail to see how putting winky faces in a nasty post is "politically correct". |

It may be defensive...but I didn't want to be drawn into the "anti newbie" thing and let Sofis use my joke for an excuse to do so. His question/comment,(in the chainsaw thread) "who authorized you to start this thread", leads me to believe he can't take a joke. My "definition" of newbie is in that thread. Isn't that definition tongue and cheek enough for everyone to see I'm not/we're not serious? Apparently not poor Sofis.

I want to explain to some that might not of gotten it...
Recently I saw a thread in OT where a new poster was acting foolish. Several GL members started posting pictures of chainsaws.
That gave me the idear to do the pic with Sherri/blueberry coolpop.
Now to have a "regular" GL'er use our joke as an actual example of other GL'ers shunning new people really pisses me off! To me, someone is an oldie on their first posts if done like Mr. President. Most newbies now have to post a new thread topic when they show up, (like I encouraged coolpop to do), then they post a topic when they leave for a day or two to announce they're leaving for a day or two, etc. Some people's posts are never contributive in my opinion but they've been here a long time. New members like Mr. President, don't show up often enough. We need more people like that and less people who deliberately misspell as an identity.

To demontstrate the chainsaw thing happens? Luna, did you get that it was a joke? No specific newbies were ever hassled. I have never hassled someone because they were new. I was obnoxious for other reasons but never because someone was new.
Conversely, there have been times I didn't attack/hassle someone even when I felt they deserved it only because I didn't want to mess with them because I liked them and respected their opinions.
I guess this makes me guilty for being a little cliquey.

Why certainly, my dear Buzzsaw, and how mature of you to not jump to conclusions.
By my comment I simply meant that the chainsawing thing is common enough to inspire you the previously mentioned joke - that when you posted that picture, you expected people to recognize it and find it funny, rather than go "Huh? Chainsawing newbies? What's that all about?" It was simply meant to show that, the concept of chainsawing newbies is well known enough that one can make jokes about it and expect to be understood. No judgement of your thread was ever intended. |

Luna, you said that most newbies were given gifts but some were chainsawed. What newbie was "chainsawed" at all? by anyone?..ever?
Also, extro was referring to the mafia roles. Not the mafia games. He said "mafia roles" but he probably meant that GL soap crap. Aren't those "mafia roles"? Is "Luna Capone" a mafia role?
I don't really like the soaps either and most of the people who participate in that stuff are part of a new crowd that seldom, if ever, contribute to any serious discussion here in OT.
Furthermore, it's been made it clear in the past that I should stay out of these discussions like the ones in this thread.
I don't like the word "newbie".
How many of the "newbies" who get all the animals and toy gifts, ever end up participating in a serious discussion?
Not many.
In the "old days" (a hell of a lot better if you wanted to learn and not just horse around and waste time),"newbies would just get into a conversation/topic if they could provide some info.
The site is changing and if you can't beat them, join them. Or leave I suppose.
I am trying to adapt to the "new" GL.

- Thanks.
Seriously though - but not to add fuel to any fires - I would think being "~handed a salamander~" or other animal or toy or cookie would be seen as pretty darn goofy by an intelligent adult (adult here meaning over the age of 11, give or take a few years). Not that there isn't room for goofieness, but let's not scare people off with it.

I am agreeing with Buzz on this. When I first came here I could browse and partisipate in a good argument where both sides had a valid point. Now I tend to steer clear of such things as I become more frustrated with the silly posts that appear here and there, which has no productive meaning to the post. Granted, some are funny and witty. but others are just meaningless blarg.
I agree too that the gl is changing big time, and we have to adjust to fit in or just fade away in the distance. I will probably get flamed for this, but I really think the influx of newbies has lowered the input of this place somewhat.
But what do I know.
Pah!

Hey Sofis. Didn't you recently call someone's mouse a pussy? Shouldn't you provide a diplomatically written post to clarify and emphasize that you were only being sarcastic?
After all, we're still not sure if you're just joking or not. Calling someone's mouse, "a pussy" is fightin' words in my neck of the woods.
Thanks in advance for your anticipated mental image when you see my name,

am i missing something here? when did anyone even refer to mafia in this thread? is this just another place for you to gripe about how things have changed?
anyway, that's a bunch of crap. the *second* soap thread has been dead for 6 months. and i hardly think that everyone posting in there was "part of a new crowd that seldom, if ever, contribute to any serious discussion here in OT" (btw, buzz, you might want to check what forum you are in). if you want to say i don't post a lot in serious discussions, fine. i probably don't, and i have my reasons for that. i *do* read them, and i can hardly be called part of a new crowd. maybe paladin (yes, paladin, poster of numerous puzzles and intellectual threads) had different intentions in starting the first one, but a bunch of people having fun writing hardly affected your ability to have intellectual discussions.
i've written before about why i think the GL isn't as "intellectual" a place anymore. i'm too lazy to find it though; probably because i play mafia and like writing. |

Okay, toned down Quail's title a bit. I'm going to leave it as a reminder to those of us who were here that the GL is a light-hearted place, and we're always having fun.
Though... after getting CJ's approval I almost decided to leave it as is. |

Hy, have you ever heard of too mucvh of a good thing?
Giving everyone, or anyone over 500 posts, or even just 1 person ruins our little theme. This is the grey LABYRINTH. Everytitle has something to do with that. Minotaur was the beast in the Labyrinth, Ariadne helped theseus through the labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus were trapped in it and flew out of it. If you get rid of the titles, all we'll have left are Labyrinth, Minotaur, and Daedalian. Getting names of the charcters from the stories was a way to show that you belogned. You can have the same subtitle at every forum you belong to if you want, but only on the GL were you given a title that had something to do with the site name. Take that way and you take away some of the sense of community. It'd be like changing your name from Govanni to Smith. You lose some of your identity of who you are. |

I once took a linguistics course in college, and the professor spent most of an hour long lecture one day marvelling about how the word "fucking" is the only word in the English language that is used as an infix interjection, i.e. inserted into other words, fully penetrating them and splitting them in two. Examples being "fan-fucking-tastic", "Ala-fucking-bama", "alle-fucking-luia", and of course now "abso-fucking-lutely". Fascinating. |

I think you raise a good point Buzzsaw. This forum was built on puzzles, and it attracted people who like to think outside the box. With the addition of games, we have begun to attract a different type of people. This is not dissing those people who don't like the puzzles. And I am not sure that this happened not being around. However, I would think that if you had a site that just discusses puzzles, you would attract a certain type of person. If you then opened up that forum to different items, then you are going to attract different people.
If we had a section exclusively that talked about barbie doll collecting, then we are going to have even a wider variety of people come. The forum would then change, and depending on who you listened to, it would change for better or for worse. |

Buzzsaw, I'd rather have a genuine Jeff K over a genuine Mr. President every day -- the first one doesn't mean it when he calls people "fagots" because their opinions differ from his.
I think it's horribly condescending to decide "we want this type of users, and not that type of users".
And does anyone else think it's weird that people say "this is a PUZZLE site, why can't people hold INTELLIGENT DISCUSSIONS" and keep a straight face?

Everyone has their preferences of what kind of posts and threads to read and participate in. Why are you putting down Mr. President for having the balls to indicate what kinds/types of posts and topics he prefers? He has done it in a classy way too.
Antrax, if you went to a site where everyone posted like me, would you stick around? Or would you be condecending to leave because, "we were'nt your kind of people."?

My comments were purely emperical. I did not mean to put anybody down, or say that one group is better than another. Merely that they were different. I would address the points that Antrax has raised, but past experience has shown that no matter what I say, Antrax hears something else. And since I really don't like to read my opinions after it's been given the Antrax spin, I won't bother trying to discuss anything this time.

BTW, did Mr. President call anyone "fagots"? I must have missed it, and my impression is that that would have been highly out of character for him.
Buzz is right. Everyone has an opinion about what sort of people they'd like to see more of here, and what type less. Hy said he doesn't like "close minded people" - is that any different? I mean, it's not as if anyone considers themself close minded. Everyone sees their own particular view of things as the open-minded view. I sure as heck know anybody who can't see the wisdom and logic in my point of view must be close-minded.
