Another animated movie. I was surprised at their over-all strength in the nominations. But will they stand up in 1 on 1 match ups?

Wow, much closer than I'd expect. I wonder what people got out of The Lion King to make it so popular.

It had a solid plot, good execution, and Elton John, and it's slightly quotable.

The plot or the film elements? I believe I (or cp) could explain about either.

Samadhi's Blade Runner game set off a whole string of me reading various Sci-fi books. Revenge most foul! Good movie, almost made my list, and Lion King is far from my favorite.

The worst part about Lion King for me is the bright vibrant colors they have in the background of "I Can't Wait to be King." It's like they were transported to a paint factory for that song. Annoying.

lol Felicitous

I haven't yet seen Blade Runner but the Lion King is definitely nothing special in my books. I don't remember crying at it. And I cry easily at movies. I just cried yesterday while watching Anne of Green Gables.

I haven't seen Blade Runner yet, so I don't think I should vote in this one. But it looked like a cool movie, and if I had seen it I probably would vote for it, but it's just to close for me to go and screw it up.

No, not the crying. The watching. Isn't it pathetic that I watch these "girl power" movies?

I cannot believe that I find myself even slightly emotionally involved in this.

As I post, the score is 25-25, and I am quite nervous and hopeful that Blade Runner will pull through.

C'mon folks! The Lion King is no Aladdin! But Blade Runner definitely is Blade Runner!

Seriously. How can the Lion King NOT stir up emotions within yourselves? When a loving, caring father dies by getting trampled by wildebeests to save his son...I mean, seriously.

It still makes me choke up.

Go Lion King!

The Lion King is beautifully animated. It has nothing else.

Simba never struggles, in any way. He doesn't do anything. He's born to privelege, accidently gets his dad killed, sulks, then gets shamed into fighting Evil-for-the-Sake-of-Evil Guy. The movie asks no big questions, and provokes no deep or interesting thought. It's just pretty.

Blade Runner demands its viewers consider all kinds of Big Questions. What does it mean to be human? What is identity? What is reality? Is the universe a just place?

Plus, it positively abounds with brilliant lines (Roy Baty, one of the best characters in any movie, ever, gets most of them):

"Chew, if only you could see what I've seen with your eyes." - Baty

"It's not an easy thing to meet your maker." - Baty

"The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. And you have burned so very very brightly, Roy." - Tyrell

"I want more life, fucker." - Baty

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain..." - Baty

This should not be so close a match. Revenge most foul! fnord.

I agree 100%. A couple of things to add.

Bladerunner is also visually spectacular. The way they created the visual effects is amazing (no CGI in 82).

Vangelis does the score.

I have to disagree with everything just said. The effects were nothing but boring. It was dark most of the time, hard to see anything. The plot was extremely confusing, people doing things for no apparent reason, and I was left no idea really what happened except that Deckard suceeded in killing all the Replicants . If there was anything else, it was totally obscured.

There was nudity for no particular reason, which kind of irritated me, I hadn't expected it.

There's no closure either. Those paper things that get left everywhere, obviously mean something to Deckard, but he'll never tell us. I have no idea who that guy was that was making them, why he made them, or why he left them at various places. Deckard walks off, leaving the viewer without any idea of what it was all for.

Ok, I'm done now. Start thrashing me.

And another thing, why does no one care that Deckard is shooting at people with everyone around? People milling all over, he's carrying a gun, and no one panics or asks any questions. He shoots someone with no particular provocation (That anyone standing there could tell) and it's buisness as usual.

And it rains 24/7 there. Why? Is there ever daylight? Did this take place on the dark side of the moon? I mean come on!

Well, it's based on a Phillip K. Dick novel. You got off cheap, believe me.

Well, some movies prefer to leave something to the viewers. It's a shame you missed so much, maybe you just needed to have someone who knows what's going on explain the movie to you. Basically, if memory serves, you don't watch a lot of movies, so I guess seeing something that's not "the director spoon-feeding the viewers a pretty story" was very weird for you.
