Haven't seen either of these, nor do I know what they are about. Enjoy?

A movie I didn't like versus a movie I don't really want to see...

This is the only match this round that wasn't immediate. The first half of the Kill Bill movie (which, by the way, splitting to two separate movies was a mistake IMO) is a brilliant tribute to martial arts movies, displaying exaggerated violence as well as some classic Tarrantino-esque script lines (although most of the dialogue is in the second half). Against it is a not as successful movie, at least financially, but one displaying a much more elaborate work of filmmaking, as well as a more original script. My vote goes to Eternal Sunshine, but only because it's up against half a movie. I am truly unsure which way my vote would swing were it up against the entire Kill Bill movie.

I have no idea what you're talking about Antrax. Half a movie? Splitting them up? Do they or do they not have different names?

Should we combine all the Back to the Future's? The LOTRs? The Star Wars?

Besides no one nominated both of them. If deemed inseperable why did everyone pick one or the other?

Ok, sorry. Sessie nominated both. But not anyone else.

dethy, there's a principle difference here. The director/writer, Quentin Tarrantino, had not intended this movie to come out in two parts (unlike the Wachovski Bros. with the other two parts of the Matrix trilogy, for example). What happened was, he failed to meet the deadline, the studio got nervous and released half of the movie, for which editing and the such were already complete. This is not the case with any of the trilogies you've mentioned. The "movies" were not filmed separately, nor were they edited separately, nor was it intended to be a movie in two parts, hell, I daresay you can't watch the second half without the first and hope to understand it.

That's a good reasoning, (and having never seen either I can't attest to the validity of the last statement) but there's still a problem. It doesn't matter if the intent was for it to be one movie. The point is that it exists today as two movies. This allows for the possability that people see one half and not the other, and thus allow for people preferring one half over the other (as evidenced by the nominations).

The reality is that it is two movies now, and you can't just fuse them back together after people watched them seperately. It would be like hearing years later Halloween 1 and 2 were supposed to be one movie. It wouldn't be the same.

By the same reasoning, people who walked out in the middle of a movie can nominate the first half of it Confused

Titanic is on two separate tapes. Could I have nominated tape 2 as my favorite movie?

Kill Bill Vol. 1 was released with the title Kill Bill Vol. 1 -- indicating to anyone that there was a Vol. 2 still to come. Halloween, to the best of my knowledge, was never called Halloween 1, even after the sequels came out.

The Kill Bills WERE one movie that was simply split into two parts.

AFAIK, Kill Bill was conceived and executed as two halves of one movie. It was released in two parts, but it's one film.

I nominated Sunshine? Really? Huh.

This one's going to be a toughie to decide.

No, you nominated both halves of Kill Bill. Also, you suck. MIB vs. Ocean's 11 is a no-brainer

I think that Kill Bill should be treated as two seperate volumes. If you go into a movie rental store, you must make two seperate rentals (ie. Matrix) as opposed to just one (ie. Titanic).

Personally, I think the *studio* should've released the entire thing as a single film.

Look, a film is a form of art. What matters in art is the artist's intention, and not how it's marketed. They can send me a Piccaso painting in little 5x5 inch rectangles, but it's still one Piccaso painting.

I'll have to abstain on this one for the moment since I never got around to watching Eternal Sunshine yet...and I didn't care that much at all for Kill Bill.

If it was customary of north american cinemas to show 6-hour films (and only 6-hour films), then I believe that George Lucas would have released Star Wars as a 6-hour film. What matters in art is not the intention, but the presentation.

If you go to an art gallery and see a portrait of half of a woman's face, you don't look around for a picture of the other half and assume that they were mean to go together.

Not having accepted your idea of "what matters is the presentation", I have to say I think your example proves my point, and not yours.

Finally, a pair where I've seen both movies! I didn't think Kill Bill vol. 1 was all that great, and Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorites. No contest for me.
