We just had a first loss of a LotR, and I think the buck stops here for Star Wars as well.

I disagree, this result is nowhere near the travesty that is Die Hard over Princess Bride.
Star Wars 6 is a great movie, and I see nothing wrong with it winning. |

Donnie Darko can't be a famous movie. I'm sure if it were really famous, than all the TV stations would have been shoving it down my throat, and I'd've have heard of it. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

Obviously, we're not voting on what's most "famous", and I'm sure you know that.
From most people here, I'd take as sarcasm the implication that nothing is good other than what TV stations shove down your throat. But I suspect that from you, that's a sincere expression of your point of view. Obviously, Beethoven's 9th Symphony isn't famous, and it royally sucks, because TV stations don't shove that down anyone's throat either.
Thank the heavens for the TV stations. What would life be like if you couldn't depend on them to shove all the good stuff down your throat? Empty indeed. Congratulations on being a vegetable. |

I thought he was only being dryly sarcastic. That being said, mathgrant voted for the wrong movie.
I would have considered using multiple personas to skew the poll except that this would make the whole tournament pointless and would be unfair to dethwing and everyone else.
And besides, The Doxy has at least twice the puppets I have so it would be futile gesture. |

You only voted for Darko because you like PLOTS and DEPTH and REALLY HIDDEN MESSAGES in your movies. To you, movies are a complex art form; to me, they're just entertainment. You like to ANALYZE the movie and look for its MEANING; I care about none of that. I just want to be entertained. Donnie Darko probably has some plots and dpeth and whatnot, and that's why you like. I'm just saying it sounds totally blah to me, just like 99% of all movies. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

We interrupt this hiatus to bring you a special report:
a) I think "The Incredibles" beating "The Matrix" by any margin is an atrocity. In fact, I'm so offended by the implications that I'm quitting this tournament (meaning I will not longer vote for anything) because I just couldn't care less from here on. If the majority of people on the GL think a random animated movie, one of many, is better in any way than a movie that is both visually stunning and who has revolutionised the entire action genre, then we are just too different for this to hold any interest for me.
b) I saw Donnie Drako last night and it's much, much better than Finding Nemo.
c) I enjoy movies that are not overly simplistic because that's a property that makes things enjoyable. That is also why I go to the GL instead of solving the "Three Hats" puzzle over and over again or doing 4-piece jigsaw puzzles.
d) I think next we should hold a book tournament, because that's about the only thing that can upset me more. Maybe Harry Potter can take down the G.R.R Martin series and Da Vinci code will beat 1984, then I can really be disgusted. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. We had a "book tournament" here in the UK a couple of years ago. You had to vote for your "most loved" book. Apart from the fact that they had to disqualify authors from having more than one book in the final top ten (as otherwise it would have been JK Rowling all the way), the final list actually did contain some real books (Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird and, to my astonishment, 1984*.) Tolkien still won though.
(*it was supposed to be a poll for "best loved" book. Even in my most bizarre fantasies I can't see how anyone could love 1984. It's a great piece of literature, certainly, but "loved"?!) |

Well, I wouldn't say that I necessarily "loved" 1984, but it was pretty close. It really made me enjoy what freedoms I have. Of course, the end disgusted me a bit. |

I disagree. I dislike the Matrix, and found The Incrdibles to be much more than some random animated movie. And if you are willing to give up just becasue the majority disagree with you, then I think we don't need you. Keep your high-minded holiness to yourself if it matters that much to you for your favorite to win every time. |

I see nothing high-minded about this.
This tournament annoys and aggravates me, so I'll stop participating, since its purpose, fun, is unattainable by me. I found The Incredibles to be the best of the computer animated lot, but as it's not out on DVD yet, I've only seen it once, and don't know how well it will hold up to a few or more repeat viewings. Repeat viewings which, for a film like this, I'd probably only see because I have kids, and they can watch a movie more than a few times before tiring of it.
I voted for The Incredibles - in retrospect, a mistake. The Matrix was great - yes, "visually stunning", and much more. |

| I think the high-minded holiness part came when you announced that you're leaving the tournament because the preferences of the majority offended you. Does it honestly offend you? Something like racism or gross injustice should be offending, a movie losing should be merely displeasing. |

It's an 'Antrax-Romulan' thing, not understandable to us basic humans.
Yes, it pisses me off too, but I'm sticking it out in the hope that at least one good film makes it to the final. |

To what end? I don't really stand to gain anything by whatever movie wins, all my favourites (except for Shawshank) were long ago voted against or didn't get enough nominations because of the terrible vice of being obscure (Oldboy and Ocean's 12 come to mind), and with every new match whose outcome I see, I grow more annoyed. There were periods where I thought this would actually surprise me, when it seemed like LotR and SW might not auto-win this tournament. But they always pulled through with 1 or 2 votes to spare, which makes me start wondering if maybe someone's cheating (which is obviously incorrect, becuase nobody stands to gain ANYTHING from this) - in short, I have far too much emotional stock in this for me to be able to enjoy it the way it's going, and it drags me back to the GL (hell, I even started posting again outside of FR), so it's just bad. There was no offense intended to dethwing or any of the participants.
Moreover, it's not like my vote would actually matter in the upcoming rounds - it's all going to be hot SW on SW action, and I've only seen each of the SW movies once, and except for Return of the Jedi (with that really annoying sound track near the end), none of them have left too deep an impression (I think I was just too old when I saw them), so I really can't rate them.
And Courk, yes, it really does offend me. Not all matches I strongly disagreed with do, but this latest atrocity does, because I feel the two movies really are comparable (they're roughly the same genre), and I feel The Matrix is just strictly superior in every aspect - the script is better, the filmmaking is better, the movie is more "important" and hell, even the fight scenes were better. So personally I feel the only reason The Matrix lost was because it came out circa 1999, and The Incredibles is still fresh in everyone's memories. That makes me believe that people aren't really taking this seriously, that there's a large group that goes "ooh, disney!" and "ooh, SW/LotR!" without any regard to what the other movie is. These assumptions are not really based on anything, but I can't get over them, so I do the only logical thing - detach myself from this, because it's affecting me badly, I'm not having any fun, and now I'm annoying other people because I can't get over the fact Matrix lost to the Incredibles and I keep moping about it, and then I spoil their fun, too.
So, adios. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

| Now it's my turn to apologize. I completely understand where you are coming from. A remember a few times during the gamefaqs contest when I had an unhealthy obsession with watching the matches and being distraught when Legend of Zelda or Mario lost. So, sorry to lose you, but thanks for participating up to this point. |
