O11 didn't seem ordinary to me. The Italian Job seemed ordinary. The Sting was good too, and probably more so than either of those, I could agree. O11 was still really good.

I daresay "The Sting" is the greatest "heist" movie, regardless of the fact Snatch is one of my favourites.

Before I start, I never participated in this tournament.

But the tournament was not about deciding which movies are the greatest of all time, it was about deciding which ones the GLers liked best. Considering most GLers are American, and the majority of us are aged 15-30ish, is it any wonder that the more recent American movies are the ones people are choosing? They are the movies most GLers are most likely to have seen, no?

...But I can't complain I suppose. I'm already horrified in mere anticipation of the book tournament. Merely seeing Dan Brown books nominated makes me want to cry, let alone how I'll feel if they win out over classics. So I guess it'd be hypocritical of me to stand up for movie-related pop culture, when its literary counterpart is infuriating me already. (I really wish I'd thought harder before putting a HP book in my nominations... but like I said, I suppose it's a popularity competition, and not a real test of merit.)

O! what a devastating blow to all the good books in the world. This book's writing is so atrocious, it brings this already flawed, boring, and childish "puzzling thriller" to such a horrid depth, not only does it etch its bilious drudge into your unfortunate mind, upset your weakened stomach with its puerile refuse printed onto every page, but also taint your very soul. Time itself falls victim to the horror that is Dan Brown, as it seems to slow to such an extent that the soiled page seems never to go away. Your eyes are ridiculed by syntax so vile, they will attempt to burrow deep into the inner niches of your brain, maybe even burn its way out the back of your head because of this caustic drek-ridden tome. The Da Vinci code is a maw, a black hole, devoid of life, love, or literature; a vacuum of the spirit, a detractor of the mind.

I can't imagine seeing it once - there's so much that you don't understand or even notice seeing it the first time, but on later viewings see or understand because you know how it fits with what comes later. For instance there's that first con ("the switch") that Redford's character and the black guy pull in the alley. You don't really see how they're doing it - you don't even know they're doing it - until it's over. You have to watch it a second time to see how it's done.

Dan Brown's books are fun enough. I just find them incredibly formulaic.

I read two of his books before reading "The Da Vinci Code"... I enjoyed reading all three books - like I said, they're fun - but by the second book I was like "hmmm, this storyline seems familiar...", and by the time I got to the Da Vinci one I already knew how it was going to end, minor details excluded. Dan Brown only has one story in him. it's a decent story, granted, but it's certainly not classic material.

Thankfully i didn't see them nominated, but if anyone nominated the Eddingses in the book tournament, i'd yell at them really loudly. If you want formulaic, well, it doesn't get any better.
