Some of you may have noticed we've been spam-attacked by bots. I've disabled guest-posting until it's over. I will re-enable it in an hour or so.

I think I got more of a workout splitting and deleting than I did at the gym.

Isn't there a way to keep them out for good?

We could disallow guest posting, and then dating games, alias diplomacy games, etc, will become more of a hassle. I can't block the IP, because the script bounced the various bots off free proxies or otherwise spoofed their address - in simple English, no two of them posted from the same IP, and some of the IPs look fake.
I can't block something in the content of their posts or usernames, because it's randomised enough to confuse automated filters.
Other ideas?

Only other thing I can think of is putting one of those visual filters on guest posts. Would probably be a pain to code though, and I don't know how much of a hassle it would be (I rarely make guest posts).

I agree. I think mafiascum has one of those too. I could be wrong.

We could allow it in only certain threads (Diplomacy, etc). Odds are a bot wouldn't hit a thread where guest posting is allowed, and I think once denied they would move on. Although, that's a guess as I don't know how the bots work.

The Diplomacy threads (some of them at least) have actually been hit quite a lot.

Or.... Only allow guests that post with a '*' at the beginning of their name. Like '*extro' or whatever. "I'm sorry, guest posting is not allowed under that name. For assistance please ask a moderator for help." could be the message they receive. Or something like that.

That one, we could do pretty easily. Sounds like I missed some "fun."

We could also put an annoying visual confirmation piece for guest posts. But that could get old fast.

Yeah, there are some members that prefer to use the guest option. I would hate to impose on them unless necessary.

How about restricting usernames for guest posts by some arbitrary rule that is shown on the posting page?

e.g. Usernames for guest posts must begin and end with an underscore.

This is similar to Da5id's suggestion - should be easy enough to code. Consider this is the GL though, maybe we should not tell what this restriction is, and let the guests figure that out for themselves? *nudge*
