I'm actually looking for the title of two that I really liked, but I'll also mention some of my favorites.
I'll inviz the story descriptions of the one's I'm looking for the titles of, just in case.
Story 1: This guy works for a museum, and he's sent to South America to find these really rare spiders. He's having some difficulties finding them since they are rare. He then falls into a cave/hole type thing. He can't climb back out. When the sun sets, he notices some spiders. No, make that a TON of spiders -- the species he's looking for. Apparently they live in the same place he fell into. They're crawling around, it's all very creepy, and I think to get out of the cave he ends up digging a sort of tunnel and that creates a sort of flood... maybe it was raining? I'm not too sure how he escapes, but the general idea is he's looking for spiders, he falls in a cave, the spiders live in the cave.
Story 2: These two people (I cannot remember if they're friends or enemies) are out in the woods. They might be hunting, I can't remember. At some point a tree falls over and pins them to the ground. They can't get out, and they may or may not argue with each other. Eventually wolves come and we get to imagine the rest. Sorry this one's a bit more vague. - The Interlopers
Other favorites:
The Interlopers - H. H. Munro
A Rose for Emily - William Faulkner
The Fall of the House of Usher - Edgar Allan Poe
The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes (Yeah, it's a poem, but it does tell a story)

| I think I've read the second one. I also think it was called The Interloper or something like that. |

| It's been 2 years, I still have no idea about the title of story 1. Any chances someone's remembered it now? |

My memory is strangely good at filling in information that might be true vividly. Courk's descriptions usually amuse me because they sound similar to my own internal dialogue.
In elementary/middle school I read and discussed many short stories. The one that I remember right now is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.
The Wreck of the Zephyr is probably my favorite illustrated children's book. I read everything the library had by Chris Van Allsburg because his name was alphabetically closest to my last name
As I enjoy reading short stories, hopefully more people will chime in with titles they enjoyed. _________________ Artwork | Fractals | Don't ignore your dreams; don't work too much; say what you think; cultivate friendships; be happy. |

I like Greg Egans short stories, for example "Closer", a close look at the practical limits of our desire for intimacy:

Once can hardly go wrong with short stories by Asimov or Lem, of course.
For example, Asimovs story "The last question" on the question whether the entropy death of the universe can be prevented:
