I JUST HATE IT to have a lot of topics on one discussion. My idea (thought of it only now) is to make a place where to post any and all of the solutions so far, possibly with the topic (and number of reply) where it came from and whoever proposed it and adhered to it.
IF ANYONE TRIES TO SAY "X is wrong, and here is why: ..." I WOULD DELETE THIS AND START A NEW ONE.
And btw, since i WON'T spend time on the other 3-4 topics around, i would apreciate any help from you guys in notifying all the solutions (and additional problems proposed) and the info i described above.
ARAYA said "By symmetry, the monkey and the weight will rise at the same rate." (opening message at "Monkey Bidness")
myself(CRYSTYB) and FRANKIEG also think this is the way things happen. (21st reply at "Monkey Business 3")
RUBBERPAW said "If he tried to climb, he would pull himself up a bit. The force of his pulling a<possibly missing letter>c</possibly missing letter>tion would create an imbalance which would place the majority of weight will on his side. He will fall to the point at which the banannas get stuck in the pulley and he can then climb the rope to the bananna point" (8th reply at "Monkey Bidness")
HYTOFRY rallied this point of view (12th reply at "Monkey Bidness")
HYTOFRY also proposed an additional challenge: "i have tied a knot in our rope on both sides, right up near our pulley, NOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN" (20th reply at "Monkey Business 3")
G4 said: "If the the pulley has a lot of mass(and maybe some friction too) then the monkey could climb all the way to the top without the bananas moving at all(if he went slowly enough.)" (23rd reply at "Monkey Business 3")
OcularGold believes the monkey will stay in place, but the bananas will go up, since the length of rope between the monkey and the crate will get shorter. So he says. I would have wanted a link to where he said it.
BECAUSE HERE IF YOU don't delete your posts, i would delete the topic (and start all over again).
Emer (unregistered) posted that "The solution is simple..." and explained it in a manner that made RubberPaw (Icarian Member) reply "i.e. my original answer." That's the reason i deleted that previous topic with the same name.

OK, this is another stupid idea, like the registering was... BUT, you say i shouldn't delete this topic, huh? OK, i won't. (see, i'm NOT threatening!) But it's JUST TAKING UP SPACE AROUND. And if someone posts to it (not edit, like i do now), it will come to the top again. That would NOT be nice, and it would effect the general look of the FORUM. then what should i do?

the crate will eventually get stuck in the pully, and then the monkey will be able to climb the rope up to it.
I apologize for not responding sooner, CrystyB - here

Can Gerbils eat cheese?
This is still a pertinent question. |

| Sure they can eat cheese. The question is...how much cheese could a gerbil eat if a gerbil could eat cheese? Anyone got any guesses? I'd say it depends on how much they ate for lunch, but I'm not sure. |

| Considering ideal conditions, the monkey can climb up the rope as if the rope was fixed. Neither the monkey or the banana end of the rope will move up or down. |

Well, of course we're not allowed to argue here
(wink wink)
The answer is yes. Gerbils can eat a monkey if there enough of them and the monkey is restrained somehow. The only question is "would Gerbils eat a monkey"
I know of people who have eaten cars by grinding them and putting a little bit in their food each day. That proves that humans can eat cars, but why would they want to?
Oh yes. I forgot Puzzleania is full of big-brained gerbils with no common sense |

CrystyB... you can't force everyone to make your thread look nice. You've been around long enough to know that anytime a serious topic comes up, everyone has to throw in their jokes... that's why this is called a discussion forum, and not a "let's-get-all-the-so-called-answers-in-one-place-where-it'll-look-nice" forum. You're trying to add order where none is needed or wanted... you should know by now that if tell GLers what is allowed, they will ignore it, if not go out of their way to break your "rule". If you really like your idea of a solution thread, perhaps you should post in the feature request forum with some reasonable idea of how it would work, rather than "threatening" everyone with the possibility of you delelting the thread.

Hmm. This is interesting. I just noticed that in UBB, unregistered users can use registered user's names. Notice an unregistered Tom and an unregistered Wonko The Sane.
Hmm. |

Mith, but order IS wanted, although i can't say needed. At least one visitor around here wants to see all the answers in a 2-10 message long topic, instead of having to read (sometimes the same thing all over again) tens or hundreds of posts, scattered on more than one page. Printed (with a font of "7") on three or more A4's. That could make anyone very happy to not have to read this forum.
I'm not forcing EVERYONE. Just who wants to respect the rules i made for this topic.
and as i said before, I'm NOT "threatening" EVERYONE... |

| I think the monkey wont go anywhere and the banana will go up until the point where it gets stuck and the monkey is free to go up to get it. |

loi, i'd forgotten i posted to this... annoying when someone replies over a month after i said something... anyway, cb, if you want to make silly rules for your topics with the threat of deleting them, by all means, go ahead. when you see at least one visitor around here wants it, i can assure you at least one around here doesn't, though im sure i could increase that number based on this thread. i can almost assure you that, if you keep these threats up, no one will bother to post anything meaningful to your threads, which i know is exactly what you don't want.

oh(reading the edited part of the orignal post to this thread), i don't think anyone other than you really cares about the 'general look of the thread'... i think pretty much everyone wants this thread around because it is part of this discussion forum. now, other topics have needed to be deleted for various reasons... but this is not one of them... deleting it would take away from the purpose of this place: discussion. this is a discussion forum. you can't expect everyone to always do what you want. that's not the way it works.
