I'm tempted to unban all IPs except those associated with registered (ab)users.

If you have a system to do that, go ahead. In any case, we probably ought to unban all IPs periodically.
I don't see a distinction between banning the IP of a registered spammer and banning the IP of an unregistered spammer. An IP is pretty unique, as I understand it. |

I originally misread Lepton's post and thought he was suggesting we periodically ban all IP's.
I thought it a rather inspired idea. |

I'm looking at the discussion forums and notice that the last registered user is "BlackPussy" who joined today. No posts as of yet, but I'm somewhat wary of the name.

| I wish we could have a small quiz for when people are registering, kinda like what Hy did on GLpics. |

That's actually a very interesting question, IMO. The simplest method is to act as a sort of man in the middle. Use the challenge the GL sends you to challenge someone else who's trying to access some content you provide, then feed his answer to the GL. For example, if I want to spam my sex site, I do the following:
a) Send a bot to register at the GL. The GL demands that it identify some string.
b) Bot sends that string to the server with my porn site.
c) The next time a visitor tries to access the porn site, the site requires that he identify a string, and gives him the GL's string.
d) Clueless horny teen identifies the string. Server sends his response to the bot.
e) Bot tries to finish registration. If successful, tells the server to let CHT in. Otherwise, sends the new challenge from the GL to the server, who again presents it to CHT.
There are other methods, but I really love the simplicity of this one. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

We could have questions like "How much money did the student need in the 'More Money' puzzle?" _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

Does the registration session ever time out? I just tried hitting refresh a few times on registration page, to see if any of the codes repeated (or if there was just the one code). After 3 or 5 or something it told me I'd exceeded the maximum number of attempts to register for this session.
So, could we set a time limit for registration sessions? _________________

Good questions. Yes, the registration session does time out. However, the scenario would be something like:
a) Bot is waiting for someone to answer the challenge. Session times out.
b) CHT solves challenge, bot attempts to complete registration. GL sends a new challenge because the session timed out.
c) Bot sends new challenge to porn server. Porn server tells CHT he got it wrong, challenges him with new GL challenge.
d) CHT answers the new challenge.
e) Bot answers the challenge within a time frame that would make sense if it were human. Bot successfully registers.
By the way, I think adding a quiz would really make this difficult. Because nobody tailors his bots to the GL, if we do something as simple as alter the name of some of the fields on the registration form, or add a field, the standard scripts would just get stuck. Plus, a question that someone who doesn't want to read the GL can't answer (even something simple like "what is the background color of this site?" can't be answered by CHT) makes the man in the middle approach nearly useless.
So, I guess I'll throw something along these lines in the To Do list. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

What IS the background colour of this site?
That is a good idea, Antrax. We've also seen a could spammers who finish their username with a *. I cannot think of how these are not actual people... in which case blocking them will be almost impossible. |

| Ask them whether 0.99999999999999999999.... equals 1. If they answer NO, block the IP. That's a good idea anyway. |

How does the board determine if the answer put in is correct?
Does it have a set of graphics, each with a distinct filename? If so, can the bots do "If filename = x, then string = whatever?" _________________

| I would imagine that it would generate the picture on the fly; it would randomise a string and then follow some sort of distorting algorithm. It doesn't sound too hard (though I could not do it.) |

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an algorithm. That would explain the ones that are impossible even for a human to decipher. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |
