OK, I thought as much, but wasn't sure.

It's been a long time since my last math class.

Hey, Vegt, we posted that the same time, all right? I would've beaten you if I hadn't wanted to make that witty remark

And no worries, fmb, it happens to all of us.

Oh, sorry. I didn't see it at first. And yes, yours was. I guess that makes us almost even, save for the few seconds you typed yours faster in, therefore giving you title of winnner.

I was going to say something similar to n00b and sl0wb...but what would that be? f4stb?

To be pedantic, a2 + b2 = c2 alone is not the Pythagorean Theorem (or any theorem - it's just an equation with an infinite number of solutions). The Pythagorean Theorem states that a2 + b2 = c2 if and only if a right triangle with sides of length a and b has a hypotenuse of length c.

The creator of the Pythagorean theorem before stated that there were no irrational numbers. When he came up with the theorem, the students found that he contradicted himself. The university kicked him out of the teaching staff immediatly

That is incorrect, to the best of my knowledge. Rather, the man who found sqrt(2) out got executed. Sounds more plausible to me.

quote:
Hippasus of Metapontum (ca. 500 BC)
Greek Pythagorean philosopher who used geometric methods to demonstrate that the hypotenuse of an isosceles triangle with legs of length one (i.e, square root of 2, sometimes called Pythagoras's constant) cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers. A number of this type is now called an irrational number. Legend has it that Hippasus made his discovery at sea and was thrown overboard by fanatic Pythagoreans.

Who discovered that c = "speed of light in a vacuum"? Was the government (who obviously funded this study) disappointed? I mean, "Could I have some money to find the speed of light in a vacuum?" "Sure, here's a million bucks".

Six months later:

"Got it. The answer is c".

Haha.

Actually, light is at "top speed" in a vacuum. In air, it's slightly slower. In glass, even slower, and yet slower in water. All depends on what it is that it's going through how fast it is. I used to know the formula for figuring just how fast light passes through something, but that was in physics class and I retained little knowledge from then.

This brings me to my little theory.

Well, apparently, I was a pretty bad assassin -- not much success there at all. As for spamming old threads, I'm terribly insulted -- any spammage promulgated by me would be stylish and classy! I'll plead to the fuzzy purple monster intent on world domination though...

But if we knew how far they threw him and where the boat was, we could probably trianglulate his point of fatal immersion.
