| When you get eyeball surgery like that (Kd, OST), does your brain have to "re-learn" how to see? I mean, like, it's getting different inputs than what it's used to? Is there any adjustment, or anything? |

Well, my appointment was re-scheduled, so they should tell me this coming Monday. Honestly, I can't say for sure, and I'm not going to notice a difference until I've had it done. I'm hoping there will be vast improvements in my field of vision, as currently I can't even look at one side of my face in the mirror. _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

So. The results of my little chat.
1) My eyes operate independently of each other. They don't track together, and they never will. This is why (if I really concentrate) I can look in 2 directions at once.
2)
| Quote: |
| currently I can't even look at one side of my face in the mirror |
because I'm still focusing with the eye that's on the other side of my nose. To look at that side of my face, I have to put my hand over one eye, so the other eye will start actually looking at things for once.
3) Any surgery I have will be purely for cosmetic reasons, and won't change the fact that I only focus on things with one eye at a time.
I'm still going to have it done, though there's a 9 month waiting list. Mostly because I'm vain. The flash on cameras makes it look worse, and I'm fed up of little kids asking me if I realise I'm crosseyed. _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

| Tell kids that you have a magic eye that can see into the future and you'll tell their parents what they're planning if they don't give you some money. You might as well take advantage of the situation. |

| Hm. Sadly, I'm not so sure I can see Moody as cross-eyed, unless one has a lot of conscious control over the eyes' position and can whirl them around at will. |

I was only 2 or 3 years old, I have only a faint memory of being in the hospital. I'm not sure how long it took to recover or if I had any vision problems. Now I'm just nearsighted. |

I would imagine it does. I know that with my lazy left eye, it would have wonderful vision on its own, but since my right eye is so dominant it spends most of its time unfocused. When i try to focus with my left eye, i can do it, but it feels highly unnatural and the focus is still slightly blurry because i can't hold it. With enough practice, i could get it to do just fine on its own. But it would have to "learn" to focus correctly and stay that way.
I imagine that having your eyes sit in different positions than you're used to would cause some problems of this nature. _________________ Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? |

1. I put together my bed without causing (serious) injury to myself.
1.5. This probably means I put it together incorrectly, but it hasn't fallen apart yet, nothing seems wobbly, and it's comfortable!
2. Finally sorted out my subjects for this semester at uni -- I get to play around with ideas about gravity waves. I'm sure there's something in there relevant to galactic domination. _________________ "Hanging is too good for a man who makes puns; he should be drawn and quoted." -- Fred Allen

I'm on the waiting list! And it's not 9 months, it's less than 6! This means the op will be over and done with by the time I go to university, which is what I originally wanted.
They've told me that it'll be 95% corrected-ish, so that if (by some horrible freak chance) they overcorrect, it'll be spot on rather than messed up. Although this means it probably won't be spot on, hardly anyone will notice the difference, as they'll be noticing that it looks better, and so won't care. Also, for about 2-3 weeks afterwards, I may experience double vision, which will be altogether rather cool. _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

That Python thing they've been doing on PBS? The one where each member did an hour long special of their own best, and they all got together to do one for Chapman?
I just saw the Terry Gilliam one.

Mm. That's the great thing about Britain - we're really indecisive about some things, so they have to put you on a waiting list, in case you change your mind. In fact, you're allowed to change your mind right up until they give you the anaesthetic... which has made for some interesting hospital chases over the years. I could have it done next week if I was prepared to fork out for it, but it's like a pizza delivery - if you're still waiting after [x] months, your op is free! _________________ Guess who's back, back again, Kd's back, tell a friend. |

Mmm. Yeah we're pretty wild in America. "Hey! I want [insert medical procedure here] so [I don't die]/[my life is better]/[I feel less pain]/[etc]! Damn. If only I was in the UK so I could sign up on a list and wait for the bureaucracy to deal with me, maybe that would teach me patience. I'm such a silly American, no wonder everyone hates me." _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

This was actually yesterday but anyway. On the bus on the way to school I had a lightbulb moment about some math stuff. I thought it was pretty cool and it sort of went against something my teacher had said. On the break in class I told him about it and he disagreed with me on some points. I had to argue some of my assumptions, that he didn't agree with, but I was right and I did end up convincing him.
I'd be shocked if it hadn't been thought of before, but it was an enjoyable moment.

I feel like clarifying my happiness on this. I really have been worried about my math abilities after all this time out of school. So, the esoteric thing that I thought of on the bus isn't about whether anyone else has thought of it, or whether it's esoteric....it's that I thought of it on the bus. (Well, and bonus is figuring out something before I'm told.) I feel really really good that I still love math. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Ever since it came out, I'd wanted to play Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Unfortunately, I never actually went out and bought it. Then we lost our N64 controllers so there was no point. I had played it for brief periods at friends' houses, but when it comes to RPGs, and maybe all games, that's never enough (unless the game is painfully bad). Anyhow, my roommate this year has a GameCube. A friend of ours with whom we frequently play games (esp. Super Smash Brothers Melee) has a Zelda collector's edition which came with his pre-ordered Wind Waker game. He has loaned us the disk, and I'm finally able to play (through) the Ocarina of Time!!! Yay!
p.s. I'm at the fire temple right now. Fun times.
Oh, and because it amuses me, I present you with the following: In my (and my roommate's) room can be found RM's (roommate) Game Cube, RM's N64 controllers, my N64, Friend #1's (zelda friend) Game cube controllers, RM's controllers, my N64 games, RM's games, F1's (friend 1) Zelda collectors edition disk and Soulcaliber 2 (or something) disk, and Friend #2's N64 controllers. Friend #3 recently bought a GameCube, but no memory card, so my RM let her borrow one of his. She also has controllers from some combination of RM, F1, and F2.
The above is needlessly complicated, but I'm too lazy to organize it. _________________ 2500th member give or take 3 |

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago, also in linear algebra (though not on a bus). Suddenly, after 4-5 years of never having thought about it much and not really having any intuitive grasp, it magically clicked: why the row space and column space of a matrix must have the same dimension.
By the way, Samadhi, re. mathematical discovery and buses, you're in good company. Henri Poincare had a crucial insight in the field of geometry right as he was getting off a bus (or perhaps getting on; memory doesn't serve). |

Sorry, Samadhi, I don't understand your post.
If A is any m by n matrix, then the span of the rows of A and the span of the columns of A are generally two completely different vector spaces. However, the two vector spaces are guaranteed to have the same dimension.
If you're referring to the proof of that fact, then yes, matrix multiplication plays a key role. |
