It's that time of year again. Famous and some less famous authors get away from their desks to socialize at a convention with like-minded individuals. What better way to spend your time than to talk to fellow authors, talk about books and make some friends in the business at the same time.

Enter: Amfia Author Con. Set on a small island called Sicily in Italy. A little over a year ago, there was a magic convention in the hotel that will play host to this event. Details on what happened during that convention are sketchy, but the prices are low...*

Well, this is no time to think, this hotel is all my budget allows. I've pulled all the strings I can, and I managed to get a slew of celebrity authors to attend.

Alive and writing (4/14)
1. Fritzler - Agatha Christie
6. The Cheshire Man (TCM)
12. Talzor
14. kennykiller (kk)

5. igota75 - Margaret Mahy - time travelling mason - stuffed (night 2)
3. Leonidas (Leo) - James Frey - Godfather - killed by well-timed vote (night 3/day 3)

THE RULES
[00] Newbies should try to make themselves familiar with the basic rules of mafia as described in the FAQ and theory sections on http://www.mafiascum.net (Reading some of my (Mgm's) older games wouldn't hurt either)
[01] Have fun and don't be a jerk. Please have consideration for the other players and the mod, and actually PLAY the game by posting and voting. If you cannot post for some reason, please contact the mod.
[02] No communication outside the thread unless your role allows you to do so.
[03] Get your choices in before the deadlines. If you don't, a random choice will be made for the first night, and no choice for subsequent nights.
[04] No quoting role PMs or night messages. If you have a death wish, request replacement. When in doubt ask the mod.
[05] If you're dead YOU'RE DEAD. No more posting relevant information after that. One bah post is allowed.
[06] Votes should be in the form Vote: Mgm.
[07] Votes should include a player's full name or a recognized abbreviated (see player list) without misspellings for it to count.
[08] Lynching will be carried out once a regular majority is reached - and cannot be undone by unvoting. If I impose a day deadline, lynching will require at least half of the regular majority. In case of a tie, the first person to reach that number of votes will be lynched. In the endgame (six players or less) only lynches with a regular majority will occur.
[09] Only votes in BOLD will be counted. Unvotes aren't mandatory, but much appreciated.
[10] Do NOT edit or delete your posts! If you made a coding error, just post again.
[11] Do NOT post in invisible text.
[12] You are not allowed to quote or paraphrase your winning condition, unless you want to risk a modslaying.
[13] The mod is always right. Accept the decisions, and if you want to discuss them, take it to email, or do so after the game has finished.

And finally the most important one of all.
[14] Please don't discuss the game once you are replaced or killed. Dead players have a way of coming back.

Tip: Google your author name or any titles I mentioned. You may get valuable insights about the inner workings of your role.

All roles are out. I will start Night 1 as soon as everyone has read their role. Those of you who can are encouraged to send in their choice early.

I only need 2 more people to read their roles. Feel free to send a choice early. The sooner you do, the shorter I can make the night.

UPDATE: the final two players have 48 hours to confirm, before I call in the replacements.

It was a dark and stormy night and the thirteen authors stood outside a run down hotel on Sicily waiting for their host.

"This is so cliché!" Fritzler complained. "Why does it have to be a dark and stormy night? I like moonlit nights without rain much better."

bluesoul and The Cheshire Man stood talking quietly under a nearby tree that provided a little (read: hardly any) cover from the rain.

Talzor sighed. "And again Murphy's law strikes, I expected sun when they said this convention would be in Italy. If I knew it would be like this, I would've packed my raincoat."

raekuul was pacing around impatiently, until he noticed something on the door. "Hey guys, did you see this?" Everyone followed him and they closed in on the door. Someone had pinned a note on it.

The word "WELCOME" was scribbled underneat in long scrawly letters.

What did it mean? And where was that fourteenth person they were expecting?

I'm also checking in. My first thought was that it looked hebrew which is quite similar to aramaic IMO. Some letters look like they are from those alphabets but I wasn't able to find a letter that looks like the < or the |.

Then I thought it might be a decryption for something italian (hey we're on Sicily) but nothing came to my mind.

I now have absoluely no clue what it could mean Confused

Assigning each unique symbol a number gives

1 2 3 4 1 5 6 7 3 8 10 8 11 8

Id guess early on that 8 could be an E or an S if in fact this equates to an 14 letter word. If someone has a pattern finder for words, then it might be useful. I suspect the || might indicate a word break, so the first word is 3 letters after the first || and then 9 letters after the next.

Alternatively, im looking at the white space to see if it means anything and or mirrors/flipping/rotating to see what that does. But nothing yet. Sadly we may have to wait for more.

In the interim can a replacement start for kdubya who is probably a newbie who isnt going to show... The replacement can leave if kdubya shows on day 1, otherwise too late.

amb, I like your number giving theory. At first I thought "14 letters = 14 players, three times the same symbol = three mafia members" Then I looked on the starting list and realised that I am number 14 on that list and that would mean that I'm mafia, which I'm not. Confused
But then I realised, that you missed the | between number 11 and the last 8. That means that there are 15 letters. But I don't know what that word could be.

"Am I too late?" a voiced panted.

Everyone turned to see kdubya (now looking a lot like Dead Rikimaru) running up the gravel path.

"Yes, you are," igota75 said, "we've been discussing this weird note on the door for hours, but don't worry about it, our host is nowhere to be seen either.

As if on cue, the door opened and a man appeared.

"Glad you could come. I'm Isaac Asimod-"

"Isn't that Asimov?" Talzor asked, interrupting him.

"I get that a lot, but no. As I said, I'm Isaac Asimod and I'm your host during this convention. Please come in, your rooms are ready."

It is now night. Deadline: Saturday 8AM GMT. Earlier choices will be appreciated.

All thirteen conventioneers reported at breakfast...

When Isaac Asimod takes the head count, he's the first to notice. "Wait! Thirteen?" The authors look around and soon determine who is missing in their midst.

Unfortunately, bluesoul doesn't make it to breakfast. He doesn't need one anyway. During the night someone broke into his room and stuffed him with healthy food. Too bad it came in lethal amounts. His convention ID identifies him as Anthony Horowitz.*

Leo stands and turns to the host. "This is outrageous! Did you take any security measures around here?"

Before Isaac Asimod can answer, all hell breaks loose.

Whoosh! Leonidas freezes and all color drains from his face. Embedded in the wall, just inches away from his neck, is a poison dart -- the type that's shot from a blowpipe. Of course, the blowpipe it came from is nowhere to be seen. And in the confusion someone took their chance to leave another note...

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the first note was this, but that doesn't really seem like it's going to pan out (for the first note or the second). Anyone else want to offer up their useless thoughts?

CzarJ shrugs and keels head-first into his breakfast. Apparently someone poisoned his salmon, spinach and mayonaise sandwich (with a side order of salad). Everyone has lost their apetite now... His ID identifies him as Orson Scott Card.
