since its for charity i thought we could combine our works, and heres my share. The pirates started with 3121 pieces of gold. And those pirates probably had calculators to figure out thier share

I disagree with that answer, but I haven't worked it out yet. I have heard a similar question before, but it involved coconuts and a monkey, and the answer was between 70 and 80. I'll get back to you on it.

The puzzle asks, "What is the fewest coins they could have began with?" dethwing's answer (3121) is correct, but his wording is a little off. The pirates could have begun with as few as 3121 coins, but they could have had more - in fact, they could have had 3121 + 15625k coins, where k is any non-negative integer. Each additional 15625 coins originally in the chest results in an additional 1024 coins for each pirate in the final division (plus their hidden booty, of course).

I rescind my post, for I made an error. The previous puzzle I had seen only had 3 pirates, so the number was a great deal smaller. My apologies.
