| I think we should disable the check to see if an email address is "valid" for the email field. Though it would be convient if everyone had valid email address listed in their profile, a bogus address is easy to place there. If we allowed things like "fsmnv[at]uaf[dot]edu" I bet more people would more freely show an email address that, when modified, is valid. |

What if I just change the "email" link in the profile to something like the old UBB to prevent email harvesting by bots? _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

You mean, listing it as text as opposed to a link? (I don't remember how it was in UBB)
If so, I'm all for it. I hate those click links. Now, if I could right click and choose (Open with gmail, Open with Mozilla TBird, etc) then I'd fight it, but as it is now it's just a lot of copy pasting. |

You can, but that's besides the point.
What I mean is, you'd have a link to another phpBB function, whose URL will give away nothing about the address. Then, that function will generate a page with that person's email address. Then we can restrict email viewing to registered members only, for instance, though I'm not sure that's the best idea.
Another idea used in other phpBB-based fora (is that correct?) is having the board itself email the member, without telling you his email address. IE, you have a link like "click here to email Samadhi", and when people click it, they get a text box and option to submit it. Then the board itself generates the email and sends it to the recipient, and he wants he can reply to whomever emailed him directly from his email, or PM and not give away his email address. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. The former idea I get, but while I agree it might not be ideal, I don't actually have anything to say against it.
As for having the forum email the person....meh. I don't see this as anything but a PM-lite (or lame, since replying would probably suck). And PM has some annoying limitations.
[Edit: just saw the direct option, still more cumbersome than PM and doesn't mitigate any of the issues with PM] |

No, it's forums.
This is a built in feature and is as easy as clicking a button to turn on.
As to having it generated by another function, that'd be pretty easy too.

The problem with being better than everybody, is that they all assume you're pretentious. _________________
