Made more changes. Let's see how these work.

No registrations for some time, and I had no problem registering a new name just now. Seems like a good sign.

This is something of an NP problem, though. If they know the details of what I did, circumventing it is easy. As it stands, it seems difficult to me.

We have two cases.
Case 1: There are automated programs that can overcome what Antrax has put up as countermeasures.
Case 2: There are losers who spend their time spreading spam on various websites.

I doubt case 2 is true.
I don't know how to help on case 1 (programming wise).

Which leads to suggesting other ways to block spam bots.

I think one prior suggestion is perhaps the way to go. Something along the lines of a reference to one of the archived puzzles.

Or something easier, but that a bot never would figure out.

Perhaps a field that asks for the product of two random integers?

I'm beginning to think case 2 is the thing. I'd expect a lot more registrations had it been automated.

We'll know for sure in a week. If it's bots, then the few now will spread.

It could be a cross between the two- an automated bot finds sites and starts the process. On the visual confirmation it prompts a human (not necessarily in the horny teen setup Antax has). Also, with the automatic fill in many browsers have, it wouldn't take long to fill out 1000s of new users.

I read the spam suggestion thread, then saw that post and thought "We don't have a spam forum yet, so I can't move it anywhere." Sorry, Lept, I aparently didn't process your post. Felicitous

Or we could do:

That's (Paladin/kittens) needlessly elaborate. If we're up against a bot, requiring even a basic level of "understanding" would defeat it, and if we're up against humans then we're screwed anyway. As previously suggested, even a simple math exercise should be enough to throw a bot off, and should be quite easy to code.
Passover starts in a a couple of days, I'll try to find time to incorporate this.

Interesting. Many of the new spambots have @cashette.com for their email address. I checked cashette.com and it appears to be a legitimate site intended to deter spam.

I'm going to research this more, perhaps it's an attempt at defamation or something. Or maybe it's a scam site.

That might be a bit extreme... There are a number of free email services that are @*email.com. I originally registered with a @startrekemail.com address, for example.

Sorry for the confusion, it's actually *@email.com, the syntax of the banning system only allows the * before the @

Yeah, there's quite a few like that. It's odd that they can get beyond our registration page, but can't manage to post.

Assuming they get no benefit from merely registering. At least I can't see how they would.
