scritcher, whoever you are, you hit the nail on the head with the hammer. that is the exact answer.

the headline is showed rightside up. the article is cut off by the top line and the bottom line is glued/taped to the backside of the headline piece. from a distance, you can't tell (unless you have 20/17 vision) that it is upside down. then when it is cut the top of the paper is actually the bottom when it was cut but since it was switched it was actually the top...
oh forget it. here is a pic (i hope)

i hope this works...
ok, why wont bitmaps work?
what formats do work?

Bitmaps work, but gif or jpeg are better. But in any case, you can't do:

[lMG]C:\MyDocuments\a.bmp[/lMG]

as we don't have access to your hard drive.

My teacher did this trick once. He used an ordinary newspaper article. It was roughly 18 inches long and 2 across. He held it by the headline, and when he cut, the bottom fell to the ground. He was in clear view, and slight of hand can be ruled out, unless he's REALLY good. I'd agree with the comment that the key sentance is printed on the back, upside-down. That is the only way it works, if this is the exact same trick, which it appears to be.

Why on the back? The headline is right-side up, but everything else is upside down. It works that way - think about it.

The top line of any newspaper isn't going to be a headline. It's going to be the DATE.

As a magician I object to this post. This is a magic trick, not a puzzle. It doesn't belong here.

Aren't all magic tricks puzzles? The puzzle is "how did he do it?"

People seem to be much... meaner... here in the puzzle threads. Maybe that's why I hardly venture over here. I have seen this one done, however, and it's pretty spiffy from the audience. I love knowing magic trick/puzzle secrets. =)

This is a message for DropOfAHat. I mean no offence, but your response to my post with its questions and by now incorrect solution made no sense to me.

If I misinterpreted the original question, and therefore based my reaction to that version as you indicate, how was I to know my post would be wrong and therefore should not be posted? Are you saying that mistaken posts are never to happen on this board?

I'm just here for the mental stretch. Sometimes, it's more stretch than mental. In any case, no offense is taken.

BearTalon:

No offense was meant on my end either, and I don't think I suggested that you had no right to be posted. Of course, this is all just for mental exercise, and without dissent it would get a little boring. I just meant that your refutation was based on an incorrect assumption about what was being suggested by me and others!

As a separate issue - does anyone else think the solution was worded rather oddly?? I THINK that the given solution agrees with one of the versions we kicked around on the other thread (that is, small text on front is upside down, only headline is right-side up), but it's unclear (which, when rearranged, spells "nuclear")

Anyway, it's all just for fun...

DropOfAHat

Yes, I agree. I thought the answer was worded strangely and it did match one that was kicked around. I didn't particularly like the solution based on my interpretation of the puzzle, but then again, if I agreed with everyone, life would be so boring

Thanks for your reply about the other things I asked as well. I admit I was being a little catty that day (in general, not just with you). Taking everything with a grain of salt helps understanding, but really plays havoc with my hypertension.

On to the next puzzle!
