I mean this puzzle.

Wouldn't it be illegal for BOTH kings to be attacked?

And i really fail to see 16 pieces attacked by pawns and NOT attacking back!
((really, IMO there should be at least 6 of those for each players, and i can only choose Rooks And Knights for the job...))

Err, the pawns are quite possible.

There's some move, I forget the name. Like the Pas des something or other.
If a pawn makes a double advance, than as long as the pawn is on that spot another pawn that is next to (Latterally) the double advanced pawn can cut to where a single advance would have left the first pawn and take it.

Remember, nowhere does it say that you can only have one piece attacking one other piece. The other thing I'm thinking is have the king in check so that they have to move their pieces. That is an inderect threat. Otherwise you have to stalemate all their pieces.

I think I've got a symmetrical solution, now let's the try the chess tag...

Chess Board
Player 1

Player 2

How you start a game with two kings attacked is beyond me though.

For quidnunc and Coma, pawns can't attack forwards and backwards.

Forget about the problem with the two kings. It's just an oversight on my part. I'll try and get it corrected in the original puzzle. Apologies for the confusion.

pawns on first rank and those quadrupled pawns (wich are impossible to get) are ok?

quidnunc: Which one is the pawn that started on a7? where did the pawns at a3 and a4 came from?

coma: how did your pawns reach rank 1 (or 8)?

I don't think we're meant to be looking for a board that's achievable in a real game since there's no way that both kings could be being attacked.

What quidnunc said

Also, there is no mention in the puzzle about what positions pawns can or cannot occupy (other than that they have to be on the board.)

I'm still curious which pawns are attacking backwards like FreeEnzyme said?

Dastal, that move you mentioned is called "En Passant", which in English is "in passing". It's an appropriate name for move, kind of like a 'clothesline' move in wrestling.

The pawns that are attacking backwards would be the ones near the queens, as the queens are not under attack unless the pawns are assumed to attack both ways, which is not allowed anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with quidnunc's.

bebemaster:

There is a link to the left as you post your reply called "UBB code is ON" which explains it.

Or follow http://www.greylabyrinth.com/Forums/ubbcode.html

the (relevant info from the) chess part of that faq says:

quote:

Chess Tag
This is certainly one of the more complicated tags on the GL. There are three different syntaxs which are used by the chess tag.
First, the most popular on the GL, is the "moves" syntax. ((but here the position isn't reachable i think ))

There is also an odd addition to this syntax called "bughouse chess." Quite simply, this will allow you to put any piece anywhere on the board by giving the color and pice followed by "@" and the square. eg. bk@e2 would put a black king on square e2.

The second syntax is called Forsyth Syntax.

Forsyth Syntax:
[CHESS]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR[/CHESS]
The board also supports regular syntax which is a bit like bughouse chess. All placements must be seperated by commas.

Regular Syntax:
[CHESS]
wpa2,wpb2,wpc2,wpd2,
wpe2,wpf2,wpg2,wph2,
wra1,wrh1,wnb1,wng1,
wbc1,wbf1,wqd1,wke1
[/CHESS]
