I just read this one and I'm pretty sure I know the answer, it just seems too easy. But rather than stick my neck out and actually post my guess, I'll wait and count how many bites this thread gets first...

Wow, I thought that was quite a tough one. Oh well C'est la vie. Well done guys. Just out of interest are there any ways I could change it to make it more difficult?

I think that the "fore and aft" part refers to mirrors. The only way I can think of to look fore and aft of you simultaneously is to look into a mirror. Then, of course, you would be unable to see the solution to the puzzle <g>

I don't know, Gomez, I suspected the answer when I read the mirror clue, and the rest of the puzzle just confirmed it for me.

It probably didn't help when I snuck in three more clues in my original reply...

I agree with the solution.

Gomez, any one of those paragraphs alone have a clue - I would say the first one is the most obscure, since it doesn't mention anything specifically.

Perhaps that paragraph alone would suffice for the puzzle, or you could probably write the other two paragraphs to be more obliquely.

I have just read this. I agree that the first verse is the most obscure - I got it right away having read all the way through.

this puzzle seemed waaaaaaaaaay too easy. i expected a much tougher challenge, especially considering how many of the puzzles are pretty hard or abstract. the clues fit together very well and all support the answer, so there is no doubt in my mind as to what the answer is. for now though, i'll just keep the answer to myself.

Well the message posted by cha was more of a giveaway. And yes the puzzle was relatively easy. Though the reflection myth was nicely couched. So the answer is "I am a vampire".

Do you think it would be improved if I were to delete the second stanza completely and rewrite the third to:

You don't need me but I need you
Although I am your foe, tis true,
But I must beg you, do not cross me,
I warn you now that that would cost me.
But in spite of all, I do not mind,
Converting others to my kind.

Who am I?

Whaddaya reckon? Worse or better?

You're not on the right track. If you want the correct answer, highlight the second post in this thread by referee.

Gomez, replacing the third stanza sounds fine, although it's hard to tell since I already know the answer.

The "cross me" and the "converting others to my kind" might be good giveaways.

How about:

Solitary I would die
When sunlight gleams within my eye
For with each cross you gladly bear
It is me your burdens share
Feed me now a lover's bloom
Feel the chill within the room
And when the feast of love is done
You and I we shall be as one.

There are several clues here, but I think they are reasonably concealed in a poem to one's lover.
