you didn't go to school at john tyler?

i see from wiki that the other school in tyler is robert e. lee...interesting to me that texans would name their schools after virginans. i'd think all that texas pride would prevent that. Cannibal

A UCLA student was studying in a library, when campus security asked him for his school ID. He refused. Then they asked him to leave; he refused. Then he got tasered.

And tasered. And tasered.

The story is here, the video here. The video was shot at a distance with a camera phone, so you won't see the whole incident... but you'll see enough.

a student at our school was telling me about this ucla story and a story of her own. they've instituted a rule at our school that you have to have your student id to enter the library after 11. a while back she had gone outside the library briefly and left her keys in an upstairs study carrel. they wouldn't let her in...she asked if one of the librarians could escort her to get her id, or if they would go upstairs and get it. they said no, so she finally bolted off up the stairs and by the time she got back down the campus police were there.

a friend at ut was telling me about a guy in their group whose car got booted because there was a previous ticket on his record (actually, he had taken care of it already). there was another guy in the group who parked at the same time who had an unpaid ticket...he didn't get the boot. the guy who got the boot is mexican and the guy who didn't is white. when the mexican went to the ticket office to take care of it, he explained the situation and they called the city police in...the city cop dressed the campus cop down for racial profiling and just generally being a jerk for putting a boot on a car for something so trivial (afterall, students have to pay off tickets before they register for another semester or get their diploma).

Wow, that kid was a fucking moron. "Here's your patriot act! Here's your abuse of power!"

And honestly, the school has every right to demand to see your student ID to be in the library. If you refuse, you get kicked out. Simple as that. Not saying those enforcing the rule can't have their heads planted firmly up their own asses, like in Worm's example, but in that video, the kid was not only wrong, but a fucking MORON. And it's not like they were just sitting there hitting him over and over for nothing. They kept telling him to get up, to move, and he simply refused to co-operate. Would you prefer the cops SHOOT him? No, they did the right thing. Let's not forget the little shit's attempts to incite a riot.

And you just KNOW he's going to be treated as the victim.

"kept telling him to get up, to move, and he simply refused to co-operate"

I totally agree, but why didnt they just cuff him and remove him? If he was being beligerant, they would have every right to simply remove him from the library, and certainly they had the ability. Wouldnt that have been simpler than tazing over and over?

As I said, I'm no fan of The Man....
But, when you're a cop and someone doesn't comply you have the right to escalate. I found this on another forum and agree completely
Quote:
I am a police officer, as well as a trainer in situations similar to this.

What the officer did wrong was continue to ask the subject for compliance. I can tell by his (the officer’s) actions and his words that he is so afraid of doing the “wrong” thing that he has let the safety and well being of both himself and the others in the area become secondary. Police officers across the country are taught to take action quickly and most importantly “don’t’ do it like they do in California.” In other places without the PC police, that guy would have been jacked up and carried out in under 30 seconds, without tasers, noise, or video.

It is a very simple principle: 1+1… if a person uses one type of resistance, a police officer (even in California) is justified in using a force GREATER than that of the offender. If you say NO, then I can lay hands on you! If you fight, I can pepper spray, taser, even hit with a stick! If you have a knife or a club, I can shoot you.

Police officers that attempt to match a person’s resistance with the same amount of force all to often end up in litigation or dead.

I always ask new recruits, “Would you rather hit a person with your nightclub one time as hard as you can in the leg and gain control, OR hit him softly (the pc version) over and over until he gives up. Inevitably, new recruits are afraid to answer until I add…” don’t forget a TV camera is recording.” One solid strike is usually all it takes to gain compliance from someone like the offender in the video, and by the time that is over the folks with the cameras don’t even have time to push record.

And Pablo, give me a break. The problem would have been peacefully resolved if the guy had either shown a Bruins ID or left. (AKA obeying the rules)

I love how tasing has become "the violent option". Give me a break, Pablo.

If the police HAD cuffed him and marched him out (which is hard to do to someone who's decided to go limp, which this student was doing), everyone who's on this little shit's side be complaining just as much, if not more so.

The police did the right thing. (Well, except for Sam's point.)

Ever been hit with a taser? As has been reported in the Lancet (one of the highest rated medical journals in the world btw) a taser shock of 3-5 seconds can immobilise someone for 5-15 minutes. So, he's is laying there unable to move yet the campus police demand he get up and make it worse by tasing him again.

Is 5 taser shocks (some of which were after he was handcuffed) the right punishment for someone who didn't or couldn't show their ID, and was leaving the library anyway?

Quote:

that wasn't the impression i had, but it wasn't all that clear from the video. do you have more reliable info?

i kinda agree with you, though. why did they have to keep tasing him? after the first one, they should've been able to take him down (with force, if necessary) and drag him off. so what if he wouldn't stand up, the question for tasing should be whether it's safe for the officer(s) to get close enough to subdue and cuff the guy. not that he's disobeying orders.

are they going to start tasing civil disobedients now? it's standard for them to go limp and not stand up for arresting officers.

[added] also, i'm curious whether these campus cops get tased themselves durign training. it's pretty common...maybe universal...that officers using pepper spray get peppered in training to give them an idea of how much it hurts. i don't know if the same is true for tasing.

Huh? I don't get this at all, but if it is a reference to Iraq, I guess I'd remind you that the "Pablo" solution has not been tried there. We're er, I mean, They're still working on the "Samadhi" solution.
