If we're going to have shit like this come up, where people anonymously post as other people's user names but with the little * behind as a "joke" or whatever that gets other users ticked off at something the REAL user did not say, it's time to shut down this unregistered posting. Seriously, is it THAT hard to fucking log in? _________________ * These senseless ramblings brought to you by Insanity™. If you just can't figure the dang thing out, it must be Insanity™.

I don't see how that solves the problem. What stops the same person from registering "death mage*" and then posting as it? _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

The fact that they have to go through registration? That and I believe creating an account specifically to spoof someone else like that is a breach in TOS, or if not, should be.
That and it would be far more obviously a fake if there weren't a bunch of other people out there using their name and a * after. _________________ * These senseless ramblings brought to you by Insanity™. If you just can't figure the dang thing out, it must be Insanity™.

I don't think that many people don't notice that it's fake.
Are you really that upset that aaron was fooled? |

have you ever looked through the member list? users have been creating accounts to spoof others for years...i don't remember a malicious example. you might disagree and think the one you linked was malicious, but c'mon it's not like you've never posted stuff a lot like your impostor's post, and if you take the travis*, death mage*, pablo* posts together, it's pretty funny.

i dunno, when i see a bunch of posters with asterisks after their name, i tend to think something's up.
and i guess it goes without saying, i don't like the idea of blocking unregistered posting you freakin' nazi.
sorry that just slipped out. |

I know you meant this as hyperbole, but it's not far off the mark. The asterisk was implemented to accommodate specific user requests (including many well known and established users) that they be able to post without logging in. There was a lot of discussion and this is the solution that was found to meet (mostly) everyone's needs.
IIRC, the discussion included the possibility of posts like the ones DM links to. And the best answer is that, if you're concerned about that, don't post "anonymously." Which DM doesn't (neither do I, except for perhaps 4 posts I've made using computers in the SDSU library), so....IMO, this is really not an issue. No offense, DM. |

Well, this is an issue, but blocking unregistered posting is too high a price to pay, IMO. If the spoofing becomes offensive, I'm sure if DM will request it'll stop. And if it doesn't, or if it's malicious, I have plenty of tools to find out who's doing it and handle it forcefully, if need be. So, I think handling the malicious cases on a case-by-case basis is a better solution than just blocking all unregistered posting. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. Yea so lately I have been posting without signing in and now when I try to come to the site my browser says a timeout error or whatever has occurred because it was taking too long. So apparently I've been banned but I can still come on by using my wireless. So if I could be unbanned that would be nice, thanks. _________________ "Heads you're good, tails you fail" says my fortune cookie |

Actually you've got that backwards. If you were banned, you'd get an immediate rejection. It's only users in good standing that get the timeout error. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

Well I'm using my college's internet because well I live at college and my roommate can get to the site through his Ethernet cable and I can't. _________________ "Heads you're good, tails you fail" says my fortune cookie |
