| Hm, I think I'm on the right track. The path I've chosen to go down involves a lot of websearching. Will report progress soon. |

| It's late where I am and I'm going to stop websearching and go to bed. What I've found so far is that each of the sets of words is the title of a puzzle from a previous MIT mystery hunt. |

MAS are the initials of the guy who made up these puzzles. The 8 puzzles were part of a weekend-long puzzling competition hosted on the Grey Labyrinth discussion forum server.
Since it was designed to be a smaller version of the MIT Puzzling competition, it earned the name "MAS Mini-Hunt". |

Thanks, Fliptop!
I've taken the time to go through the Hunt archives and find the puzzles in question. The 2003 Mystery Hunt archives can be found at http://www.mit.edu/~puzzle/03/www.acme-corp.com/teamGuest/index.html , and others are linked from http://www.mit.edu/~puzzle/hunthistory.html .
The flavortext hints that you need the solutions for each puzzle. They're included below:
code:
Grounded for Life KIWIS
Financial Report ARKANSAS
The Chimera KLAXON
Day Tripper ODYSSEYS
Art for Art's Sake RETRO
Triple Feature RISING
Inner Tube HBO
Packet Loss ATHENIAN
Buried Treasure POMPEII
Screening Room HOLLYWOOD
Alternatives IGNORANT
Background Research ORBISON
Poetry in Motion PUBLIC STORAGE
Three Square Meals HAM
Crossword OWLETS
Minor Inconsistencies BOURBON
Morale Booster INADEQUATE
True and False APPLE DUMPLING
The first letters spell KAKORRHAPHIOPHOBIA. This was a puzzle from the 2001 hunt; the answer to the puzzle is MARILYN MONROE, who is clearly the Mage we need.
CrystyB: The flavortext mentions "creatures", and there are approximately 150 words in the wordsearch. What's a famous group of approximately 150 creatures? Pokemon! However, considering the difficulty of the wordsearch, it may be better to go to the solution at http://www.mit.edu/~puzzle/00/set2/1/Solution.html
Guest, there's some background in replies 8 and 10 at http://www.greylabyrinth.com/Forums/Forum4/HTML/000495.html . |

| Ok, how do we know that this is actually a puzzle? I mean, it could be a bunch of words that someone just wrote down to mess with our heads. |

I'll do that some time for you.
The point of many puzzles is to appear like nothing but a jumble of words, letters, symbols, etc, unless you look at them from the right angle. That was one of the underlying themes of the MAS Mystery Mini-Hunt. Hints can be found in the flavourtext above the puzzles.

There's a connection between the words. If you want to know what it is, highlight the posts above. The words eventually lead to a solution, so it's a puzzle.
[edit] Yeah, what Lepton said.

Looks like a hintless crossword to me. Try to fill it out. One might think that the red boxes mean places where no letter is supposed to go, but I think after you fill out the crossword, those spots highlight letters that spell something out.
No, I haven't the time to do it now, unfortunately. Too much pressure at work now. |

Thanks LuckyWizard and Nocturnal for your replies. btw, LW, next time you include invisi-text, hint that you are by placing some dot or even a smilie at the end... Or at the least make it contain more lines, so that the space would be meaningful...
I had scheduled myself to do the Pokemon fillup (i did realise it was Pokemon the instant i read 'group (of creatures) of ~ 150' so ) when i got time for it, but thanks to your latest post i looked to see if i had missed any 'connection between the words' that you mention.
