Welcome. What my puzzle minotaur friend was trying to say was, these issues were long ago voted and decided on, in the site design forum. If you feel the need to illustrate or emphasise something using colors, take it as a challenge to get the same effect with word selection, line breaks and the formatting tags we do allow. And if you want to stand out, instead of an avatar, make outstanding posts.

If you're a master "encryptor", could you tell me how you propagate linear characteristics through a linear transformation? I've been working on it for two days and all I can think of is arbitrarily adding bits to the plaintext subgroups and finding a set of such additions that the transformation's result has a small number of bits set. However, this is very costly to exhaustively search, and I can't figure out a way to efficiently implement such a heuristic.
So, is there anything more to it than intuition and/or completely arbitrary decisions?
If it helps, the cipher I'm looking at is Serpent.
