Can you name these thirteen great novels from their opening lines?

I got 12 out of 13. And the one I missed is from a book that I have read!

For the record, I have read ten out of the thirteen novels from which these lines are taken.

10/13. Out of the three, two had nothing I recognized (or read).
The other....bah. I just read the correct answer no more than 6 months ago! [2001. You have to admit it's a trick question.]

I got 11/13, but I have only read 0.5/13.

Trying to work out the inconsistency, I realised it must be CV and Groza's fault... one of their puzzle hunt puzzles had me looking up first lines of famous books.

9/13, I have read 2 (and one of those was one of my wrong answers...).

It took me four goes to get 13/13 without looking at the answers. Started 7/13, 8/13, 11/13, 13/13. I had much more problem with the later questions than the earlier ones in the list. (And from 8 upwards, yes, of course I was just trying guesses)

Impressive. I'd figure it would take apx .5 * 4 13 to randomly get it. But you the man!

I dunno about that! OK they weren't random guesses, I just changed the answers I thought "less likely" - I didn't do it scientifically or mathematically. Gut feel and fluke, I think, heavy on the fluke.

8/13 - but most of the ones I got were obvious - A Tale of Two Cities, Moby Dick, Bulwer-Litton, Peter Pan...
