The former description was "A free market experiment, play GL mafia here." Or something like that. After the descriptions were changed on RL day, it was changed to its current description.
It was past time for us to change this. The forum is working pretty damned well after 4(?) years so it's not much of an experiment anymore. So overall it was a good change. I'm averse to putting free market back in the description, now that it's not an experiment any more. And 'free market' is a buzz word, not everyone knows what it means.
But, I think the fact that it is free market, so to speak, is key to the way that we handle mafia here. I don't think any other website handles it the way we do.
The sticky I started a couple of months ago in mafia 'How do I begin a mafia game?' was started with the intent to move the 'free market' from the description to a faq of sorts. I don't think I did a good job. But I do think that we should develop a faq of some sorts.

It's been a while since I last played Mafia, so my opinions are perfectly ignorable. Well, they always are, but moreso in this case.
I think that the 4 stickies is a bit much. There should be one; maybe two. I don't (and never did) see any reason for a "coming attractions" thread in the free market environment. The vacations thread screams "I'm too lazy to post in the three games in which I play". A single sticky is more than sufficient: link to the rules, link to Mafiascum, give a rundown on how to start a game, give a GL-specific introduction, and maybe link to some old games. (and definitely link to this
According to Wikipedia, Mafia was first played online on the GL. Why not something boastful like "The Web's First Home of Mafia"? |

It's like you are my secret muse (I agree with everything you said)
[Edit: Changing the description to that right now. Dealing with the superfluous threads takes more discussion...] _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

I like the new description.
A mafia FAQ is a good idea, and can include information on how we run games. Maybe the Vacation thread could be unstickied and a link to it included in the FAQ thread? That way it's easy to find if you need it, but it doesn't hang out on the top.
The point of the Past Games thread is that some of the older games are split up over multiple threads. Some of them are even pieced together over multiple sites because the original threads are lost. Also, by listing every game in one place, it makes it easier to find a specific game since you don't have to browse back several pages. My plans are also to include some brief statistics on the games, like mod, winner, maybe the dates. Edit: It could probably be renamed. "Old Mafia Threads" isn't the most appealing name. Maybe "Mafia Archive"? "GL Mafia Archive"?

The "Mafia Related Threads" part of the old games thread could be moved to an FAQ, I think.
The "Current Games" is included to make updating finished games easier. It's a bit messed up right now because I haven't had time to do much with it, but Amb has been helping. I think some of the current games need to be removed as abandoned.
The coming soon thread doesn't really need to be stickied. A link can be included in the FAQ, or not at all. It's not that important of a thread. |

| What are some other synonyms for "Web"? I'm not fond of that word in the description. "Internet" seems more formal, but I'm not sure about that, either. |

I've unstickied the upcoming and the vacation threads. If people want to post in them, so be it.
Ideally, the "How Do I" should be replaced with a FAQ that's better than the one I wrote. (shouldn't be hard to do)
Then the old threads thread could be linked within the FAQ. _________________ And he lived happily ever after. Except for the dieing at the end and the heartbreak in between. |

I've renamed "Old Mafia Games" to "GL Mafia Archive and Important Threads." I'm not overly fond of that name, I would prefer "GL Mafia Archive" but since more than just the games are linked there, I thought the longer title was more descriptive.
Once an FAQ is put together, I think it would be better suited to its own thread, taking the important threads links with it. The archive of past games is pretty long, and I don't think it would look good in the same thread as an FAQ. I'd also like to keep the games thread to just games, plus threads like the Vacation thread would be more suited to an FAQ: "What do I do if I'm going out of town for a week?" "Post in the Vacation thread. *link*" |
