this(these) is(are) a composition gomoku problem(s). they are the same as chess only they are gomoku.

rules: theres two players - "O" and "X"
whoever gets five in a row in any direction wins

heres the first:

"O" starts and wins in 6th move

(notation: the net is 10x10 full squares and the solution never leaves this boundary. lets go with [x,y] as the coordinates.
[1,1] would be the first full square of the lower left corner
[10,10] would be the last full square of the upper right corner

well done, thnx for that antrax, ill be fixing my webpage shortly

heres another one...

"O" to move forces "X" to win in move 6.

(hope "O" can't force "X" to win in like 3 moves or so... not so sure about my own puzzles... sheeesh)

What do you mean O "forces" X to win? How can you force anyone to win in gomuko?

same way as in chess... for example in chess you only have one way to block a check, and by blocking the check you at the same time checkmate the oponent.

same in gomoku. you are forced to play your "o" or "x" at a certain spot - which is advantageous for you.

note: this is not a real game situation, its just for the sake of the puzzle, nobody trying to win would look for a scheme that would force the oponent to win...

I don't understand why O wouldn't just play 5,4 and win the game?

because thats not the object of the puzzle...

just like in chess puzzles where white forces black to checkmate him. its not a regular game, its just a puzzle situation. afterall its YOU who play both white and black, so why care who wins? theres tons of chess puzzles in which the object is to force your oponent to checkmate you. in slovak its called a "samomat" im still looking for a translation in english so i can make myself clear...

So then how about ...

O [7,4] X [6,5]
O [5,2] X [5,4]
X will now win next move at [4,3] or [9,8]

Qn

well this is going even better than i thought... you guys are fixing all the dumb bugs... anyways i lost the answers to my puzzles somewhere in the heap of papers on my desk, but what's obvious is obvious...

i think that might classify as a selfmate as well.

in my solution (which i can't find) i had it worked out down to the fifth "X" by forcing...

not having my original solution i had to re-solve, and i found a perfect 3 move solution, where in 3rd move X wins by placing his fifth X...

so much for my hopes in post #4 of this thread LOLOL
