Should I take the controversial elements out?
I would read a book like this and think it is okay to have them in.

I've been writing this novel for a long time. I think it's about 1/12 to 1/9 of the way done. However, I have some controversial elements that I'm questioning whether or not I should keep them in there. Here's the most prominant: (The two main characters as kids take drugs and have sex.) It makes sense to actually keep these elements, but I'm not willing to keep them if it would keep people from reading my book.

So what do you guys think I should do? Trim the fat, or keep the meat?

What is the book about, too? If it's about, say, a trip to Candy Mountain, what you describe would be out of place. I wouldn't want to read a scene like that if I'm not expecting something like it from what I'm being led to believe the book is about. And from that sentence, we see why Courk is not a writer.

My audience, now that I think about it, is young adults and probably also older teenagers. My favorite author, Lynn Flewelling, showed me how much artistic freedom is in writing, and her audience extends from teen to middle age. So, I'm hoping that I can also earn a broad range with my writing.

Here is some of the novel's plot: (The two main characters are a brother and sister of an evangelist who is trying to convert this city of a newly-created cult. Their childhood is when their characters ripen. They interact with the people of the city at and after school, though not integrating into the cult themselves. The controversial elements would have great development to characters and symbolism to the story as a whole, since on of my themes is identity and searching for it.)

I don't think I'd be overly surprised by scenes like that in that story.

I'd leave them in and make your publisher/editor tell you to remove them. Of course dont point anything out to him.

Make sure you dedicate the book to the GL so we get heaps of visitors.

... well... then maybe you should take it out Enthusiastic Grin

I too would probably expect something like that to arise from the general plot outline you have given. But yeah, I agree that you should just wait and see what the editor says.
