Your goal here is to match an entry from List 1 with an entry from List 2 by finding the single word which defines (or is defined by) both list words. There are no run on links, such as beach [ball] room. Each and every link is a definition. Not difficult, you think? Some are not but here's the catch(es)...
* spacing and punctuation are irrelevant e.g. if the word you see is atone it could mean atone, a tone, or at one
* i have a bent towards the cryptic - these vary from straightforward to the very cryptic
* the lists are in no particular order
Examples:
quit links to rehire with resign [re-sign]
small dam links to suffocate with smother [s-mother]

Here's the lists...

List 1
ca
a
yearning
spike
combination
altitude
girl
moralize

List 2
amend
true
proceed
hate
notable
John Doe
patricide
ironman

btw ... if anyone knows how I could've put the lists side by side let me know (tabs don't work here).

Qn

p.s. if u would like a hint for the first word in list 1 check out the Cryptic Crossword Thread.

ZutAlors! Thanx, that's exactly how I wanted it.

Do you guys want me to tell you when you are right or wrong or just leave you to work it out? Each of them only go with one of the others (they may go with more, somehow, but I think when you have all eight the solution is unique).

*arepair is not a single word

why don't i just make it easier and line them up with their correct partners?

code:

ca[t] manx-man(x) John Doe
girl female-(Fe)male ironman
altititude height-h8 hate
a amends
yearning patricide
spike proceed
combination true
moralize notable

(Edited to remove bad mood caused by beer )

Here's another answer
code:

ca[t] manx/man(x) John Doe
girl female/(Fe)male ironman
altititude height/h8 hate
a mid[day] amends [a.m. ends]
yearning desire patricide
spike Goon/go on proceed
combination mixture/mix[ture] true
moralize cant/can't notable [not able]
