I received this in Chemistry, and I thought it was interesting. It is fairly easy, but I'll post it here.
[edit]Fairly easy, that is, if you have taken Chemistry.[/edit]
You are given 26 elements, labeled A to Z. These letters represent the first four Periods of Groups 1, 2, and 13 to 18, skipping the B groups. You are supposed to arrange all 26 elements according to these clues.

The following elements are in the same groups: ZRD, PSIF, JXBE, LHT, QKA, WOV, GUN, and YMC.
Here are your clues:
1. J has an atomic number three times that of T.
2. U has a total of six electrons.
3. Two atoms of I and one atom if A combined form a simple formula of an oxide.
4. P is less dense than S.
5. S is an alkali metal.
6. E is a noble gas.
7. W is a liquid.
8. Z has the smallest atomic mass in its group.
9. B has ten protons.
10. O has an atomic number larger than V.
11. D has the largest atomic mass of its group.
12. C has five electrons in its outer energy level.
13. F is a gas.
14. X has an atomic number one higher than F.
15. L is an alkaline earth element with atomic mass of 40.
16. Y is a metalloid.
17. O is a halogen.
18. The atomic mass of T is more than that of H.
19. Q has an atomic mass 2 times that of A.
20. Atomes of I are larger than those of S.
21. M has an atomic number one less than that of A.
22. The electrons of atom N are distributed over three energy levels.
23. The atomic radius of K is the largest of the group.

Do not use any outside resources, especially a periodic table. You do not have to associate each letter with the proper element. You only have to arrange the letters in their proper order.
code:

1 2 13 14 15 16 17 18
+--+ +--+
1 | | | |
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
2 | | | | | | | | |
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
3 | | | | | | | | |
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
4 | | | | | | | | |
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

This is what I have so far:

code:

1 2 13 14 15 16 17 18
+--+ +--+
1 | F| | X|
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
2 | P| H| Z| U| M| A| V| B|
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
3 | S| T| R| N| | Q| O| E|
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
4 | I| L| D| G| | K| W| J|
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

I can't remember whether phosphorus is considered a metalloid.

No. I wouldn't be surprised if there were many other people who have done this.

Just out of curiosity, where do you live?

California. It's just that I know this guy (Marc) who insists on being called Sir Sparticus, and he took Chemistry.

aaaargh, neither can I... I don't think so.... *goes to check a periodic table, justifying it on account of the fact that he won't post what he finds=P*

...

not that I would have been able to do any of this on my own, btw. All we've studied is the very basics, like Atomic Numbers and mass and stuff, Group names and properties, general trends (like the lower left is much more reactive than the upper right), and the very basics of moles and... uh... Avocado's number=P

...

Okay, now I've satisified my curiousity. I'm leaving=P

Clue 23 seems suspicious to me. Wouldn't the largest atomic radius be at the lower left? which can't possibly be true because K is not part of a four-element group.
Maybe it should be 'ionic radius?' or else I'm missing information.

oh 'the group' is 'the family.' I thought it was referring to 'the group of elements represented on this table.'

I agree completely with Lucky Wizard. I would also like to propose that of the two he lacks, Y is the one at the bottom of the table.
I have also determined that the following clues are unnecessary. I may have missed some:
5,6,17,18,19.
Feel free to request to your teacher to cut those five out to make it more difficult for future classes, thus raising the average IQ level of the planet by that fraction of a point.

Unfortunately, the average IQ of my school is fairly low, so they would probably need those five clues.
