I didn't get far on this one, just noticed that the colors on each row are listed in this order
1:yellow
2:blue
3:red
4:purple
5:orange
6:green
7:brown
8:black
9:white
and that the the list is anti-symmetrical.

| I got that far, and that they were in fact billiard balls, as Naboo suggests. However, Logain tells me that there is more that I am missing, and that the reason one of the colors is not quite correct is neither because the cue ball should not be among object balls nor that brown is really more of a maroon. |

| I had pretty much the same answer as Naboo. I sent in that Logain & his friend were playing 15 ball pool. The friend was in charge of racking the balls. However, he didn't rack them in the traditional order and also included the white, which was incorrect. I'd be interested in seeing the full answer. |

| It's more to do with nine-ball than 15-ball pool |

I'd never heard of 9 ball pool but it sounds like an interesting game. I suppose the final answer to the problem is that the 9 balls are arranged in a diamond thus:
..Y
.U R
P O G
.B K
..W
where Y = yellow, U = blue, R = red, P = purple, O = orange, G = green
B = brown, K = black, W = white
and the 9 lines give the balls which touch each ball of the diamond, arranged in numerical order assuming they are all spots (Y= 1, U =2, R=3, P=4, O=5, G=6, B=7, K=8) , with white given some notionally high number. Thus the illegallity is that the centre ball is the orange and not the 9 ball i.e the yellow stripe.
The rules of 9 ball state that the first ball should be the yellow spot (1 ball) and the centre ball should be the yellow stripe ( 9 ball)
I think that there are several options on stating which ball is 'technically wrong' in colour:
the white, which shouldn't be there, the centre ball which should be yellow not orange, and the brown which is really burgundy.
And the fact that Logain plays competitively against someone so lacking in the basic rules says rather too much about him... |

It looks so simple once it's pointed out to you.
Just to expand on what Oscar has
Since the puzzle states "one of those colors is technically wrong" - that statement applies only to the 9 ball. The striped balls should be referred to by the colored stripe, not the partial solid, since all the striped balls are technically white. |
