I was pondering word-game alternatives to the 3X3 puzzle, and I came up with this. I doubt the idea is totally novel, but it might be fun. This puzzle us all about assembling longer words out of shorter ones. Below you'll see 36 words. The challenge is to assemble "crossingwords" by grouping sets of four words around a single letter to make two new words. Confusing? Here's an example:
EXAMPLE
Start with these eight words: Bun, Can, Led, Line, Pies, Ran, Stereo, Tramp .
These eight words can be seperated into two crossing groups to create four new words, just with the addition of G and O:
code:
s
t t
e r
r a
e m
o p
bunGled canOpies
r l
a i
m n
e
So there are now four new words: stereogram, bungled, trampoline, and canopies. As well as a fifth: GO
END EXAMPLE
See what you can come up with using the words below. Like the example, the additional "internal" letters will spell a word (a nine-letter word, natch). By the way, there is at least one repeat "internal" letter. I'll keep tabs and post and de-bold correctly used words. Ready, set, GO:
Apes
Belly
Bled
Breech
Day
Eels
Fest
Gram
Have
Hill
Ice
Lands
Late
Latte
Lint
Lop
Loth
Man
Mate
News
Phone
Ping
Ration
Ream
Redo
Repo
Rest
Sack
Ski
Skin
Sting
Subs
Tab
Table
Tea
Wind
CORRECT WORDS:
code:
l l
a s s a
t u k s n
t b i k d
e s n i s
newsReels manIfest bellyFlop teaMmate iceCream
d s l p a
a t i i p
y i n n e

e e i a
s d n v
t o d e
gramOphone tabUlate breechCloth repoRtable
r b h s
a l i a
t e l c
i d l k
o
n
Final word (anagram of RIFMCOUCR) is (invisible)CRUCIFORM(/invisible)

and "apes" and "bled" are likely endings, and "redo" and "repo" likely beginnings. |

Skimping and latterday it is.
I was intending to shy away from hyphenated words, and, indeed, dictionary.com gives both "latterday" and "latter-day" as entries. |

And the last I found is
RedoUbled
But now that only leaves Sack & Wind with a C
So maybe Haverhill is wrong ?
So let's clean up those last three
RedoUbled
WindChill
HaveRsack

| And that finishes it up. Goodness, that went faster than I expected; I guess this was a little easier than I thought it would be. |
