After searching the forum, I couldn't find a section in which to ask questions about Mafia played on this site. So, I figured I would put it here, and if it needs to be moved, then so be it.
Anyway, i'm new to this site, but not mafia. I come from a far away land that includes cyborgs, minotaurs, and monsters...Err...I mean I was hoping I could get some questions answered, before I start/join some games.
I'm used to a 24 clock deadline, whereas the lynch deadline is 24 hours (real time) after the night write-up. Is it the same here?
Also, how active are the players? Will it takes me months just to fill up a game?
And how serious are people here? I once said "Lynch all Townies" as a joke, and was lynched (while being Town). You think that'll happen here?
If I have anymore, i'll shove them in between responses |

Not really no. The games here can last a few weeks down to six months depending on size. The number of players here have diminished in recent times, so a six month game is pretty unlikely these days. Two months is probably more likely. (20 player) Twelve player can be shorter if you can stop players lurking (not posting).

New mods are treated with a bit of suspicion if they havent spent time playing. It seems to vary a lot. I got a 30 player game going in 24 hours once, and sign ups for a 12 player game that never filled!...
As to sign ups to play - (If thats more what you meant) - They can fill fast or slow depending on season. Summer seems to get more people. I can't figure that one out.
Feel free to PM me to ask about any Mod's experience. We have had a few new ones of late, and one or two games havent quite worked out.

Speaking for myself - I don't think the site here is overly serious. You would probably be lynched for the humour value anyways
On a side note: You could check out www.mafiascum.net where they play a lot. I can tell you that they do take things too seriously there, but the <smaller> games seem to move faster. (Their larger games from my experience are snail like and I usually give up and wander off - unless I am mafia - in which case I kill the boring players) |

Well, I actually joined Mafiascum today with the same account name. But, once they told me it takes 24 days to go through one lynch I teleported out of there quite quickly. I guess I couldn't take waiting a whole year just to play one game.
What are the times usually like here? The deadlines I mean. |

Welcome! If I had the ability, your title would be "BAMF!"
When I mod, I typically let the first day last a bit longer than other days, especially if there's no night before, since people are trying to find something to go on. I also like to give about 5 days of notice before setting a deadline (a lot of times because my own schedule is crazy and I can't guarantee availability before that). Also, it's because that's what I've always used -- I don't allow myself to vary it since that could allow favoritism to seep in. If a townie's going to be lynched, I don't want to give the town extra time to change their minds, nor do I want a soon-to-be-lynched mafia to have less time than normal to defend himself.
To me it seems my day 1s usually last 2-3 weeks, with other days being shorter, most likely 2 weeks tops. If most people seem to be participating (and I assume having fun), I wouldn't mind letting a day carry on for a bit longer. I don't ever start a day and say "you have 2 weeks" but my goal is to keep it moving along. |

| Oh, I agree with Amb on the seriousness. I don't think the GL is too serious, but mafiascum can get a bit intense. I remember the first time (and it might actually be the only time) I played with mafscum people. There were times when I thought "Guys... just a game." |

This depends on the mod. I like a two week turn around myself, as can be shown in my Deep South Games. But a day - especially the first one - can take a month. It was the length of time playing that attracted me to mafia in the first place. The idea of a six month game appealed to me.
It may just be that this timing isn't right for you. Certainly 24 hour lynches are going to be pretty rare. |

Days don't usually have deadlines until people slow down in activity.
Nights usually last about a week.
Games do take a long while. I wouldn't recommend playing in a game unless you are interested in other parts of the forum.
We are not very serious if you ask me. |
