So what? Their campaigns are useless as the almighty Python circus crushes the weakling Mythbusters. _________________ Potato. Belgium. Eight. Random Lynch # Mafia awaits. |

We should round up the people who voted Mythbusters and shoot them (alternately we can just give them shameful titles).
Why did Mythbusters get this far in the first place? |

I generally disagree with moderator power abuse, but that's a cause I could get behind. |

Like, I've been shot down by the moderators!
Though to clear myself I did vote for Monty Python, but you may not believe me and it will be the witch trials all over again, instead this time with people who voted for Mythbusters. _________________ Potato. Belgium. Eight. Random Lynch # Mafia awaits. |

I voted for Mythbusters. As much as I like MPFC it's just too eclectic and is often hit-or-miss for me. There's a lot of classics, yes, but the thing I like about Mythbusters is that there's not only neat tricks and whatnot, but there's also at lest a surface treatment of the science involved in most of the experiments. Also, I'd *love* to have that kind of job I can watch Mythbusters continuously for hours on end and be both entertained and enlightened (to a certain extent.) MPFC can get somewhat mindless after a while, which is better in short bursts. _________________ Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? |

| OK, I say we throw TGC in a pond to see if he floats (we all know Mythbusters voters don't float). Wordy, well... he didn't repent so I guess it's a ponding for him, too. |

While Monty Python definitely has its moments, I've noticed that most of their skits are funnier when they are explained than when you actually watch them. This even goes for the famous ones like the Dead Parrot skit, the job interview, and the Ministry of Funny Walks. (Your milage may vary, especially if your friends aren't particularly funny.) While this brings the dubious joy of hearing the funny parts repeated ad nauseam, this indicates to me that they had good ideas but poor execution.
While Monty Python had their moments, I don't really enjoy watching random episodes, or the complete series. The majority of the episodes of Mythbusters are at least good background noise for me, so I voted for them.
I also suspect some of the love Monty Python is receiving is due to Holy Grail, or even Life of Brian. I'm definitely seeing a lot of Holy Grail quotes used.

First of all, the puppets on this forum should not try to revolt. I would like to inform the puppets that moderators really can't change anything about users. Only admins hold that evil power.
I am disappointed that it took this long to dispel the believe that Mythbusters is actually worth watching. I abstained because I don't believe much in anti-votes. |

L'l, I don't think explanations are better than the sketches. Among my favorite Python bits are "Dinsdale!" and "And now, number three, the Larch. The Larch." Explaining what's going on doesn't make it funny. I don't care that it's a slide show, it's how it's said, which can't really be explained.
Even Dead Parrot Sketch -- I don't find it funny because someone's staunchly refusing to believe the bird is dead, I think it's funny because of the way they managed to pull it off. It's Cleese and Palin. It's the way all of them can deadpan even the most ridiculous things (though Cleese does almost lose it in the lead up to The Hospital For Overacting) |

I voted for Mythbusters. I love Monty Python: the six guys are all hilarious, the movies are fantastic (Life of Brian and Holy Grail are masterpieces, and Meaning of Life is a brilliant collection of sketches), and the radio broadcasts were great. But they didn't really take advantage of the TV format, Flying Circus lacked the sharp-edged humour that we see in the movies and in other projects (such as Fawlty Towers). Flying Circus is a lot of noise, a good deal of humourous situations, and some great actors.
Mythbusters isn't a great show, but it is consistently good. It has a purpose, which it carries out acceptably well (for a prime-time audience), and manages to combine science and anti-mysticism with the nearly-forgotten arts of craftsmanship in a way that people find enjoyable.
I like the criteria given earlier: I can watch a couple episodes of Flying Circus before the screeching starts to hurt my ears, but I could watch entire seasons of Mythbusters. |

I'm inclined to agree. I think Mythbusters has done really well to get to this last eight - it is a distinctly superior non-fiction show with a format that works and very little dumbing down involved (anyone who has had the misfortune to see the UK show Braniac will know that...)
And I even know that MPFC wasn't quite as ground-breakingly original as it appeared (they've admitted the debt they - and everyone else! - owes to Spike Milligan, not to mention the various pre-Python projects they did) - but... when Python is good there is still nothing that can touch it. Sure, every episode may be 90% crap, but that remaining bit is unbelievably funny and remains my favourite. _________________

re-emphasising just to name a few - as Scurra said, 90% of any individual episode may be crap (especially Terry Gilliam's paper animations) but Python has given so many classics that are funny the first time you hear/see them and go on being funny forever. I know the vote isn't for the Python movies, but they went on to distill the classic essence of the series into feature length movies. (I'm not a great fan of "the Meaning of Life" but "Holy Grail" and "Life of Brian" are expertly blended combinations of that distilled essence.) If there hadn't been enough pure gold Python moments from the TV shows, then they'd never have been able to make the films. As it is, you can chuck a net into the sea of TV material and certainly have to throw a lot back, but as well as some good fish, you're almost bound to have hauled up a casket of treasure.
That being said, I haven't voted this round, never having seen mythbusters. Until Scurra mentioned it, I was under the impression it was a sort of American "Brainiacs" - and very confused as to why it had come so far, with so many votes against Python this round too. |
