Hello all. The Grey Labyrinth is moving to a new web server very shortly. At the same time, I've also made some changes to the layout and the content management system. I've done a fair amount of testing so I don't expect any major problems.

If you find any problems once the site move is complete (broken images, missing pages, browser issues, etc.) please post to this thread.

All of the Images at the top are missing (Grey Labyrinth, Puzzles, Archives, Links, About, Discussion, Interact, and Nerdware) Also, the links seem to Also, only Grey Labyrinth and Discussion seem to work. Puzzles goes to an index page instead of the pretty puzzle page.

Also, the image that says "Discussion Forums" seems grainy like it's been enlarged from a smaller picture.

I'm also not real thrilled with the gray on the sides of the screen, but that's an opinion, not a problem.

Ignore that post, I think I caught things in the middle of the update. I actually like the gray bars with the gradient, and the images are working.

I'd like to see the size of the icons and title bar reduced. They are overbearing and using too much of the screen size. This would allow us to put the "Nerdware" icon back on the top as well.

ditto.
Also the size of the ad bar isn't really optimum, it's too deep for the page - I know they have to be standard sizes, but is there any way it could be extended width-wise and made less deep instead?
Also, it's in the wrong place, and quite overly obtrusive - it would be better above the Discussion Forums heading and menu options.

Also, we have lost the PALADIN connection. What was the L again?

I agree, can we put the ads up above the words "Discussion Forums" and the messaging bar?

On the About page, "Rubik's" is misspelled "Rubic's".

Is it possible to rearrange the Google ads layout? The "Ads by Google" tagline takes up more than one vertical line of text (as deep as the grey bar where the Legal link is). If the tagine was off to the left, it could be level with the ads and we reclaim that space.

When I am at forum level, there is a line "Users browsing this forum". When I'm viewing a topic, the space where that line appears is left empty. Can you collapse it when the view is topic, and only show the line when the view is forum-level?

I disagree that the ads should be moved up. Doing so would place the grey line and the grey box too close together.

The Interact, About, Legal, Privacy and Nerdware pages require left/right scrolling. The paragraphs do not wrap in the browser window.

Nope, that's fixed by Google.

I don't know, maybe one of our phpbb gurus can answer that.

I'm not seeing that behavior, but I did find a missing /span tag that I could imagine might cause that in some browsers. Should be fixed now.

If ref has a problem, I'll just quote what Jeff from Fark.com said when they went through their own layout changes.

If to reply a bit less callously, seeing as I was asked in PM about these:
I don't know the exact cost of hosting the GL on the new sever, but you can check our host's webpage, http://www.theplanet.com/ and get a feel for their pricing.
On the old server, if memory serves, hosting cost several dozen dollars a month, which Kevin has been paying out of his pocket for most of the time, assisted by donations from several members. However, seeing as donations have a tendency to stop unless members are constantly prodded, which would create a less pleasant atmosphere, the decision was made to go with Google ads, which are less of an eyesore.
I would assume the ad money goes towards paying server costs. I am unaware how much revenue these ads generate, especially since they've been up for only a couple of days. From my experience, these ads are usually enough to pay server bills.
As for the layout change, I'd like to remind people that the site still says "Site Design by wx3" on the bottom Felicitous. Besides, based on past experience, Kevin is open to suggestions.
Please move further discussion to the appropriate forums, Site Problems and Site Design.

I've updated the permissions for Site Design to 'registered'. Hopefully this will help direct conversation to that forum.

Can the ads on the puzzle pages go along the top? They bother me on the side. They don't actually interfere with puzzles, but I *feel* like they're interfering.

Hey, er. I just spent three weeks thinking the site had simply gone away, because the page I had bookmarked, http://www.greylabyrinth.com/index.htm , gave a 404 error. It was only just now that, on an idle chance, I tried it without the index.htm.

In case other sites still link to the old page, that ought to be aliased to the new front page.

Ugh, this is more of a joking concern, there was a John Mccain ad that flashed above the pages. Does the forum really want 100 more years of war? Wink

Also, maybe controversy among more of the democratic members of the place, but I understand why the ads are there, just more of a slight noticing.
