Hes is my great great great (a few more hundred/thousand * great) great great GrandFather. How can I disagree.
Yup, he answered the question "If the whole world was doomed and you and yours were going to be the only survivors, what memento would you take with you" with "Alcohol". |

I am defining great as influential. Greater things affect what's around them more than little things.
(After 13 of them, I ran out of good ones and started using less good ones, so some of these are not as influential as I would like.)
Adolf Hitler
Albert Einstein
Alexander the Great
Buddha
Carl Frederick Gauss
Copernicus
Euclid
Galileo
Gandhi
Genghis Khan
Isaac Newton
Jesus
Josef Stalin
Julius Caesar
Leonardo Da Vinci
Mao Sedung
Martin Luther King Jr.
Plato
Richard Feynman (thrown in there because I think he is cool)
Thomas Edison _________________ This statement is false. |

In alphabetical order:

Jesus Christ
Leonardo da Vinci
Johannes Gutenberg
John Lennon
Ludwig van Beethoven
Michael Jordan
Muhammad

I forgot about musical people!!
I would like to not that I did not include Columbus in my list because someone would have "discovered" America fairly soon after if he had not, so how much did he really contribute? Plus, there is evidence that some European fishermen were fishing in the Americas in the mid 1400s. _________________ This statement is false. |

Defending your omissions is unnecessary. If you didn't think they deserve to be there, then you don't include them, and, should they make it through to the actual contest, then you can make your argument there.
Personally, I find it interesting how many scientists made the various lists, when I think that for the most part their contributions come under the same sort of heading as Columbus (i.e. many people had the same general idea; they happened to be the one who is remembered.) Even though I included several in my own list, which makes me a hypocrite. But there you go. _________________

If Hitler is going to get nominated, Stalin needs a nomination. Stalin killed way more people and changed way more stuff than Hitler, we just don't know as much about it.
I think it's interesting that a lot of people nominated Beethoven and not Mozart. I thought people thought that Mozart was the best classical composer of all time.

My selections...so far...in no specific order
Albert Einstein
Stephen Hawking
Winston Churchill
Brian Eno
Yuri Gagarin
Isaac Asimov
Alan Turing
Joss Whedon
Marie Curie
Paul McCartney
M C Escher
Arthur C Clarke
Galileo Galilei
Isaac Newton
Francois Truffaut
Richard Dawkins
Seeing some of the other choices makes me strongly suspect that some religeous candidate will win... At least to my knowledge, none of my selections have been the cause of wars...
There are some interesting (and bizarre) choices out there! |

I think I might just sit this entire thing out. Not sure why the canidates are so skewed towards most of the people from a distant past, too many explorers, inventors, religious figures, not enough Clooney types if you know where I'm getting at. _________________ Potato. Two changes for the second half of the Round of 32(ish):
1. The ongoing polls are posted as ""stickies", so they will stay at the top of the thread listing.
2. Julius Caesar, JS Bach, and Charles Darwin have been added to the original 32 in such a way as to maintain the pseudo-advantage of candidates who got a large number of nominations. These 3-way battles starkly illuminate the question: "what IS greatness?"
For ties, I'll renew the poll for three days. After that, I'll ask the opinion of the next person I see, in order to break the tie. |
